Description

Who was Levi?

In the words of STEPBible TIPNR:

Levi was the third son of Israel (or 'Jacob') and Leah (Gen.29.34). Along with his brother Simeon, he took revenge on the Shechemites for the rape of their sister Dinah (Gen.34.25-31). Jacob rebuked them for this act on his deathbed (Gen.49.5-7). Levi had three sons: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari (Gen.46.11; Exo.6.16). His descendants, the Levites, were set apart as the priestly tribe (Exo.32.26-29; Num.3.5-13). They were responsible for the tabernacle and its services (Num.1.47-54; 3.14-39; 4.1-49; 8.5-26). The Levites were given cities throughout Israel, but no territorial inheritance (Num.35.1-8; Jos.21.1-42). Notable Levites include Moses, Aaron, and Samuel. The Levites are frequently mentioned in the historical and prophetic books of the Old Testament, as well as in the genealogies of 1 Chronicles. In the New Testament, Levites are mentioned in connection with the temple and its services (Luk.10.32; Jhn.1.19; Act.4.36). The Levitical priesthood is contrasted with the superior priesthood of Christ (Heb.7.1-28).

Relations

Direct connections

Every entity the graph places in a stated relation with this one, grouped by the kind of link. Each relation is authored once and its inverse derived, so both ends always agree. Rows marked “registry” come from the identity spine rather than from a verse, and a row marked “which bearer is the source’s decision” is one where the name could have meant more than one person. The last group is not a relation at all — it counts the events two entities stand in together.

How the graph connects Levi10 of 83 entities the graph connects to Levi, in 2 groups: kinship 4, events 6. Kinship, company and ground are stated relations; events counts the acts two entities stand in together and is not a relation. Each mark is sized by how many verses name that entity and labelled with the link and the count, so the grouping and the size are both readable without colour. Distance from the centre carries nothing.IsraelChild of · 38 events · 2,578 versesJudahSibling of · 10 events · 1,023 versesAaronDescendant of · 8 events · 333 versesJosephSibling of · 197 versesKinshipLORD8 events · 1,004 versesDavid9 events · 964 versesJerusalem14 events · 888 versesPeople5 events · 838 versesMoses24 events · 786 versesPriest17 events · 202 versesEventsLevi

Places

Where this happens

The places the claims about this person reach, drawn where the gazetteer locates them. A point is where a row puts them and never where tradition does; no line joins two points, because the rows state where and not in what order.

Where the story of Levi happensAll 7 places the claims about Levi reach, on a map of the world the text moves through, framed to them: Bethlehem, Jerusalem, Kidron, Egypt, Gibeah, Massah, Meribah. Each dot is a coordinate from the gazetteer, sized by how many rows put Levi there. The coastline is a modern one, simplified; no border, road or settlement of any period is drawn, and no line joins two points, because the rows state where and not in what order.BethlehemJerusalemEgyptMassahMeribah
