The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

Israel went down to Egypt with an entire family tree in tow—and Joseph met him there with a chariot and a flood of tears.

The journey begins at Beershebavv. 1–7

Israel sets out with all he owns, stopping at Beersheba to offer sacrifices to the God of Isaac. In the night, God tells him not to fear Egypt: the descent will become a nation, and Joseph himself will close his eyes. So Jacob goes, carried along with children, wives, livestock, possessions, and every branch of the family.

The family tree boards the wagonsvv. 8–27

Then comes the roll call: sons, daughters, grandsons, and the children born through Leah, Zilpah, Rachel, and Bilhah. Er and Onan are carefully noted as already dead in Canaan, while Joseph’s sons Manasseh and Ephraim are counted as members of the family born in Egypt. The numbers arrive in stages—sixty-six direct descendants, then seventy with Joseph’s two sons—a genealogy with its arithmetic showing its work.

A reunion in Goshen, followed by a delicate instructionvv. 28–34

Judah goes ahead to get directions to Goshen, and Joseph arrives in his chariot to meet Israel. The embrace is extravagant: Joseph weeps profusely, while Israel declares that seeing his son alive is enough to let him die. Joseph then prepares the household for Pharaoh, advising the shepherds to name their occupation plainly so that Goshen may be theirs—because, in a remarkably frank final sentence, shepherds are detestable to Egyptians.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
