The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

The sacred portion is declared clean by an oddly precise inventory: it was not eaten in mourning, removed while unclean, or offered for the dead. The chapter does not explain why those three, but it is wonderfully exact about what did not happen to the basket’s contents.

The basket and the remembered journeyvv. 1–11

Once Israel has entered the inherited land and settled there, the firstfruits go into a basket and travel to the place chosen for the LORD’s Name. The priest receives the basket, and the offerer recites the family history in miniature: a wandering Aramean, a descent into Egypt, oppression under hard labor, a cry heard, and a mighty deliverance. The recital ends where the basket has arrived—with the land, its milk and honey, and its firstfruits laid before the LORD. Then come the bowing and the rejoicing, shared with the Levite and the foreigner dwelling among Israel.

The tithe and the final exchangevv. 12–19

In the third year, the tenth is distributed to the Levite, the foreigner, the fatherless, and the widow, so that they may eat and be filled within the gates. The accompanying declaration is almost comically careful: the sacred portion has left the house, reached its recipients, and escaped three particular misuses—mourning, uncleanness, and the dead. After this exact account, the speaker asks the LORD to look down from heaven and bless both Israel and the land. The chapter then turns from the ceremony to the relationship itself: Israel proclaims the LORD as God, and the LORD proclaims Israel as His people and treasured possession.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.
