The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

The younger men are given one brief instruction, while nearly everyone else receives a small wardrobe of virtues, duties, and warnings.

A household of instructionsvv. 1–10

The older men are measured out temperance, dignity, self-control, faith, love, and perseverance. Older women are to be reverent, sober in speech and drink, and teachers of good; their teaching is meant to train young women in love, purity, household management, kindness, and submission. The younger men, by contrast, receive the wonderfully compact commission: “In the same way, urge the younger men to be self-controlled.” The one addressed is then given the longer demonstration, with good works, integrity, dignity, and speech so clean that an opponent is left with nothing bad to say. Slaves are told to serve without argument or theft, so that their conduct may adorn the teaching about God the Savior.

Grace appearsvv. 11–14

Then the household instructions open out into a much larger scene: the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to everyone. It teaches a renunciation of ungodliness and worldly passions, and a present life that is sensible, upright, and godly, all while awaiting “the blessed hope and glorious appearance” of Jesus Christ. Jesus gave Himself to redeem people from lawlessness and purify for Himself a people eager for good deeds—a remarkably energetic people, not merely a tidy one.

Say it plainlyv. 15

The final instruction returns to speech: encourage, rebuke, and do so with all authority. The closing sentence is brisk, almost comically undressed of ceremony: “Let no one despise you.”

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
