The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

Braided hair, gold, pearls, and expensive clothes are marched into the worship instructions, only to be sent offstage in favour of good deeds. Then, quite suddenly, childbearing appears as the road to salvation, with no map supplied for the journey.

Prayers for everyonevv. 1–8

The chapter begins with a grand sweep: petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgiving are to be offered for everyone, including kings and all in authority. The desired result is a tranquil and quiet life, while the reason reaches further still: one God, one mediator, and Jesus giving Himself as a ransom for all. The speaker then pauses to certify the account—“I am telling the truth; I am not lying about anything”—before turning to men everywhere, who are to pray with holy hands and without anger or dissension.

The clothing catalogue and the unexplained endingvv. 9–15

The instructions for women begin with clothing: respectable apparel, modesty, self-control, and a surprisingly precise prohibition against braided hair, gold, pearls, and expensive clothes. Good deeds are offered instead, followed by quiet learning and a restriction on teaching or exercising authority over a man. Adam and Eve are brought in as the reason: Adam was formed first, while Eve was deceived and fell into transgression. The final sentence takes an abrupt turn into salvation through childbearing, adding faith, love, holiness, and self-control, but giving no account of how childbearing performs its part.

  1. 1 Tim 2:1First of all, then, I urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgiving be offered for everyone—

  2. 1 Tim 2:2for kings and all those in authority—so that we may lead tranquil and quiet lives in all godliness and dignity.

  3. 1 Tim 2:3This is good and pleasing in the sight of God our Savior,

  4. 1 Tim 2:4who wants everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

  5. 1 Tim 2:5For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,

  6. 1 Tim 2:6who gave Himself as a ransom for all—the testimony that was given at just the right time.

  7. 1 Tim 2:7For this reason I was appointed as a preacher, an apostle, and a faithful and true teacher of the Gentiles. I am telling the truth; I am not lying about anything.

  8. 1 Tim 2:8Therefore I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands, without anger or dissension.

  9. 1 Tim 2:9Likewise, I want the women to adorn themselves with respectable apparel, with modesty, and with self-control, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or expensive clothes,

  10. 1 Tim 2:10but with good deeds, as is proper for women who profess to worship God.

  11. 1 Tim 2:11A woman must learn in quietness and full submissiveness.

  12. 1 Tim 2:12I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; she is to remain quiet.

  13. 1 Tim 2:13For Adam was formed first, and then Eve.

  14. 1 Tim 2:14And it was not Adam who was deceived, but the woman who was deceived and fell into transgression.

  15. 1 Tim 2:15Women, however, will be saved through childbearing, if they continue in faith, love, and holiness, with self-control.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
