Psalms 135

Every verse links to the people and places named in it, and to the passages readers connect it with.

The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

The idols have mouths, eyes, and ears, but not one of these splendid appointments works; then comes the deliciously severe suggestion that their makers and devotees may grow equally uncommunicative.

The LORD above all godsvv. 1–14

The psalm opens in the house of the LORD, with servants standing in its courts and praise rising for a name called lovely. The reason given is not slight: the LORD chose Jacob and Israel, commands heaven, earth, sea, cloud, lightning, rain, and wind, and then turns to history. Egypt received signs against Pharaoh; firstborn were struck, mighty kings fell, and their lands became an inheritance for Israel. The name endures through generations, while the LORD vindicates his people and has compassion on his servants.

The idols with all the fittings and none of the functionvv. 15–18

The nations' idols are silver and gold, made by human hands. They possess the full outward equipment of a person—mouths, eyes, ears, even breath's proper doorway—but speech, sight, hearing, and breath are absent. The makers and those who trust them are said to become like them: a remarkably economical fate, and one with very little conversation in it.

Blessing from Zionvv. 19–21

The closing movement gathers the houses of Israel, Aaron, and Levi, along with those who fear the LORD, and gives each the same small, sturdy assignment: bless the LORD. The final word comes from Zion, where the LORD dwells in Jerusalem. Hallelujah, once more.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
