The LORD’s everlasting covenant arrives alongside the quite immediate matter of food: the hymn’s grandest theology keeps a place at the table.

A hymn among the uprightvv. 1–4

The speaker gives thanks with the whole heart, not in a corner but in the council of the upright and the assembly. The LORD’s works are great, splendid, and majestic, and those who delight in them ponder them. His righteousness does not expire; His wonders are made memorable, while graciousness and compassion stand beside the grandeur.

Food, inheritance, and a covenant that will not budgevv. 5–9

Then the hymn stoops — pleasingly — to the provision of food for those who fear the LORD. The same LORD remembers His covenant forever, shows His people the power of His works by giving them the inheritance of the nations, and makes the character of those works plain: truth, justice, and trustworthy precepts. They stand upheld forever and ever, and redemption has been sent to His people; the covenant is ordained forever, and the name is holy and awesome.

Where wisdom beginsv. 10

The final verse gathers the hymn into wisdom: the fear of the LORD is its beginning, and following His precepts brings rich understanding. The praise, like the righteousness and covenant before it, endures forever — a remarkably durable conclusion for ten short verses.
