The singers begin with tambourines and dancing, then appear with high praises in their mouths and a double-edged sword in their hands—an abrupt change of musical programme.
A new song, even from the bedsvv. 1–5
Hallelujah opens the door, and Israel is summoned to rejoice in its Maker and King. Praise arrives with dancing, tambourine, and harp; then, in a wonderfully domestic flourish, the saints are told to shout for joy upon their beds. The LORD takes pleasure in His people and adorns the afflicted with salvation, so the beds are apparently not allowed to remain quiet.
The sword joins the musicvv. 6–9
Then the praise acquires an edge. A double-edged sword appears alongside the high praises, and the singers are charged with vengeance on nations, punishment on peoples, chains for kings, shackles for nobles, and the execution of a judgment already written. The psalm calls this honour the portion of all His saints, before ending—as it began—with Hallelujah.
