The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

A vine conquers mountains and mighty cedars, reaches the Sea and the River, and then finds itself at the mercy of a forest boar. Biblical horticulture has seldom been so grand, or so poorly fenced.

A prayer under strainvv. 1–7

Asaph opens with the Shepherd of Israel, who leads Joseph like a flock and sits between the cherubim. Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh are summoned before that enthroned power, while the people complain that their prayers themselves seem to have become objects of anger. Their food is bread made of tears, their drink a full measure of tears, and their neighbours and enemies provide the rest of the misery. The plea returns: let the face of God shine, and let the people be saved.

The vine and its remarkably small enemiesvv. 8–13

The people become a vine uprooted from Egypt, with the nations driven out before it and the cleared ground ready for planting. It takes root, fills the land, shades mountains, and spreads its branches to the Sea and its shoots toward the River. Then the walls come down, passers-by pick its fruit, and the whole expansive enterprise is ravaged by one boar from the forest and the creatures of the field. The scale changes rather splendidly from empire to wildlife report.

Look down upon the ruined plantingvv. 14–19

The prayer turns from describing the damaged vine to calling God back to it: look down from heaven, attend to the root planted by the right hand, and regard the son raised for that purpose. The vine has been cut down and burned; the requested remedy is a hand upon the man at the right hand, followed by revival and renewed calling. The final line gathers the whole lament into its refrain, asking again for the shining face and salvation.
