A man can receive bad news without fearing it, lend freely, scatter gifts to the poor, and have his horn lifted high in honour.

The steadfast manvv. 1–9

The psalm opens with a man who fears the LORD and delights greatly in His commandments. His household has wealth, his descendants are mighty, and light dawns for him in darkness. He is generous, lends freely, and lets justice guide his affairs. Bad news does not unsettle him: his heart is steadfast, assured, and trusting in the LORD. He scatters gifts to the poor, while his righteousness endures forever—a remarkably busy righteousness, one might say.

The wicked man’s unhappy inspectionv. 10

The wicked man sees this and is grieved. He gnashes his teeth and wastes away, while the desires of the wicked perish—the whole business ending rather badly for the desires, and not splendidly for the teeth either.
