The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

Abaddon and Death have heard only a rumour about wisdom; God knows its place.

The miner’s hidden worldvv. 1–11

The chapter begins underground, where human ingenuity is magnificently inconvenient to the darkness. Man finds silver, gold, iron, copper, sapphires, and flecks of gold; he cuts shafts, overturns mountains, hews channels, and stops up streams. Birds of prey and proud beasts have missed the path entirely, which is perhaps just as well for the birds.

The rumour of wisdomvv. 12–22

Then the chapter turns from what a miner can prise out of the earth to what no living creature can locate. Wisdom cannot be found in the land of the living, cannot be bought with gold, and will not be outshone by the treasures of Ophir, Cush, or anywhere else. The ocean depths and the sea decline responsibility; even Abaddon and Death have only heard a rumour.

The one who knows its placevv. 23–28

God, unlike the miners, the birds, the sea, and Death, understands wisdom’s way and knows its place. The chapter gives Him the whole map: the ends of the earth, everything beneath the heavens, the weight of wind, the measure of waters, the limit of rain, and the path of the thunderbolt. Having established and searched out wisdom, He says what it is for man: the fear of the Lord, and turning away from evil.
