The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

Wisdom begins at the crossroads and ends by the doorway, having first disclosed that she was present when the heavens were established.

Wisdom takes her standvv. 1–11

Wisdom is not tucked away in a study. She calls from the heights overlooking the road, stands at the crossroads, and cries beside the city gates. Her invitation is aimed at the simple and foolish, while her own speech is presented as straight, truthful, and worth more than silver, gold, or rubies.

Her household includes kingsvv. 12–21

Wisdom introduces her companions as prudence, knowledge, discretion, counsel, sound judgment, insight, and strength. Kings reign by her, rulers enact just laws, and princes and nobles govern justly. She also speaks of riches, honor, righteousness, and treasuries made full—a rather well-stocked doorway for a virtue that began by calling in the street.

Before the earth had its furniturevv. 22–31

Wisdom now reaches back before mountains, fields, springs, and even the earth's dust. She was there when the heavens were established, when the deep received its circle, when clouds and fountains appeared, and when the sea was given its boundary. Then comes the chapter's most unexpected workshop scene: Wisdom is a skilled craftsman at the LORD's side, rejoicing in the finished world and delighting in the sons of men.

The waiting at the doorwayvv. 32–36

Wisdom returns from the architecture of creation to the people waiting for her. The blessed man listens, watches daily at her doors, and waits at the posts of her doorway. Finding her is finding life and the LORD's favor; failing to find her harms the seeker, while hatred of her is paired with love of death.
