The chapter
What happens here
Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.
A woman begins her invitation with peace offerings and paid vows, then, without so much as a change of subject, offers a bed dressed in Egyptian linen and a night of caresses.
Words kept closevv. 1–5
The speaker begins with commandments kept inwardly and visibly: treasured within, guarded like the eye, tied to the fingers, written on the heart. Wisdom is to be called sister and understanding kinsman, a household of words intended to keep the young man from the adulteress and her seductive speech.
The house at twilightvv. 6–23
From the window, through the lattice, the speaker watches a young man lacking judgment drift towards a woman's corner at twilight. She appears, seizes him, kisses him, and gives her invitation a curious beginning: peace offerings have been made and vows paid. Then come the colored linen from Egypt, the myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon, and the practical news that her husband is away with a bag of money until the moon is full. The young man follows, first under the spell of persuasion and flattering lips, and then in the chapter's brisk procession of doomed creatures: ox, deer, and bird.
The road downwardvv. 24–27
The warning returns to the sons: do not let the heart turn aside, and do not stray into her paths. Her house is given the final piece of geography, a road descending to Sheol and its chambers of death; the chapter leaves the road going down.
