The angels’ great protective commission ends with a stone beneath one foot.
Under the wingsvv. 1–4
The psalm begins with a person settled in the shelter of the Most High and the shadow of the Almighty. The speaker answers with a compact catalogue of confidence: refuge, fortress, God. Then the danger arrives in its little menagerie—the fowler’s snare and deadly plague—and the Almighty answers with feathers, wings, faithfulness, shield, and rampart.
A spectator to catastrophevv. 5–13
Night terror, daytime arrows, darkness-borne pestilence, and noon calamity are all named and then denied their claim. The scale becomes rather grand: a thousand fall at one side and ten thousand at the other, while the protected one watches. The angels are then given their assignment—not merely to fend off plague or lions, but to lift a person clear of the most ordinary little disaster imaginable: striking a foot against a stone.
The answering voicevv. 14–16
At the end, the LORD speaks. Love and knowledge of the divine name bring deliverance and protection; calling brings an answer, presence in trouble, deliverance, honour, long life, and a showing of salvation. The psalm has moved from the shelter of the Most High to the voice of the Most High, which is a pleasingly direct way to finish such an elaborate security arrangement.
