The righteous are planted in the house of the LORD like trees, flourishing in the courts and still producing fruit in old age.
A song fitted with stringsvv. 1–5
The song is marked for the Sabbath day and begins with praise to the Most High, morning and night: loving devotion at one end of the day, faithfulness at the other. It arrives equipped with a ten-stringed harp and a lyre, the exact number of strings offered without explanation, as though ten were simply what the occasion had ordered. The singer rejoices in the LORD’s deeds and the works of His hands, then finds both the works great and the thoughts deep.
Grass, trees, and the long viewvv. 6–15
The senseless man and the fool miss what the singer sees: wicked people may sprout like grass and evildoers may flourish, but their apparent success has a remarkably short future. The LORD remains exalted forever; His enemies perish and the evildoers scatter, while the singer’s horn is lifted like that of a wild ox and his head is dressed with fine oil. His eyes see the downfall of his enemies and his ears hear their wailing. Then the picture turns green: the righteous flourish like palms, grow like cedars in Lebanon, and are planted in the LORD’s house and the courts of God. Even old age does not stop the harvest; they remain healthy and green, proclaiming that the LORD is upright, their Rock, with no unrighteousness in Him.
