The LORD sets a table among enemies, anoints the guest, and lets the cup overflow.

The shepherd in the valleyvv. 1–4

David's psalm begins with wantlessness and moves through pasture, water, restoration, and righteous paths. Then the landscape acquires a shadow: the singer walks through the valley of death, with no promise that the valley will politely change its name. What steadies him is the LORD's presence—and, rather splendidly, the shepherd's rod and staff.

The table among enemiesvv. 5–6

The shepherd's care turns into a host's ceremony. Enemies are still present, but the answer is not disappearance: a table is prepared before them, the head is anointed, and the cup overflows. Goodness and mercy then follow the singer all his days, ending not in a hurried departure but in dwelling in the house of the LORD forever.
