Job remembers prosperity as a landscape where even the rock poured out oil and a smile became a precious event.
The days when God watched over himvv. 1–6
Job longs for the months gone by, when God’s lamp shone above his head and the friendship of God rested on his tent. His children were around him, his steps were bathed in cream, and the rock poured out streams of oil—a remarkably generous piece of geology.
At the city gatevv. 7–17
At the city gate and in the public square, Job’s arrival rearranged the company: young men withdrew, old men rose, princes covered their mouths, and nobles fell silent. Those who heard him called him blessed because he rescued the poor, helped the fatherless, made the widow’s heart sing, served as eyes to the blind and feet to the lame, and took up the case of the stranger. Righteousness was his clothing, justice his robe and turban; the unjust, meanwhile, lost their fangs and their prey.
A king among his troopsvv. 18–25
Job expected to die in his nest, with roots by the waters and dew on his branches, his glory ever new and his bow renewed. People waited for his counsel as for rain, drank in his words like spring showers, and treated even his smile with solemn disbelief: the light of his countenance was precious. He chose their course, presided as chief, and dwelt among them as a king and a comforter of mourners.

Job 29:2“How I long for the months gone by, for the days when God watched over me,
Job 29:3when His lamp shone above my head, and by His light I walked through the darkness,
Job 29:4when I was in my prime, when the friendship of God rested on my tent,
Job 29:5when the Almighty was still with me and my children were around me,
Job 29:6when my steps were bathed in cream and the rock poured out for me streams of oil!
Job 29:7When I went out to the city gate and took my seat in the public square,
Job 29:8the young men saw me and withdrew, and the old men rose to their feet.
Job 29:9The princes refrained from speaking and covered their mouths with their hands.
Job 29:10The voices of the nobles were hushed, and their tongues stuck to the roofs of their mouths.
Job 29:11For those who heard me called me blessed, and those who saw me commended me,
Job 29:12because I rescued the poor who cried out and the fatherless who had no helper.
Job 29:13The dying man blessed me, and I made the widow’s heart sing for joy.
Job 29:14I put on righteousness, and it clothed me; justice was my robe and my turban.
Job 29:15I served as eyes to the blind and as feet to the lame.
Job 29:16I was a father to the needy, and I took up the case of the stranger.
Job 29:17I shattered the fangs of the unjust and snatched the prey from his teeth.
Job 29:18So I thought: ‘I will die in my nest and multiply my days as the sand.
Job 29:19My roots will spread out to the waters, and the dew will rest nightly on my branches.
Job 29:20My glory is ever new within me, and my bow is renewed in my hand.’
Job 29:21Men listened to me with expectation, waiting silently for my counsel.
Job 29:22After my words, they spoke no more; my speech settled on them like dew.
Job 29:23They waited for me as for rain and drank in my words like spring showers.
Job 29:24If I smiled at them, they did not believe it; the light of my countenance was precious.
Job 29:25I chose their course and presided as chief. So I dwelt as a king among his troops, as a comforter of the mourners.’’

Who else the chapter reaches
Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.
Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
