What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

The men who once scavenged among wastelands and hid beneath nettles now mock Job in song, keep close enough to spit in his face, and build siege ramps against him.

The mockers at his right handvv. 1–15

Job begins with an insult of almost agricultural precision: these younger men are not worth assigning to his sheep dogs, and their fathers would not have made the cut either. Once gaunt scavengers, banished and shouted at like thieves, they lived among wadis, rocks, holes, shrubs, and nettles. Now the very rabble has arrived at his right hand, rolling through the breach of his ruin with no one to restrain them.

Thrown into the mudvv. 16–23

The mockery gives way to the body itself. Affliction grips Job by night, pain gnaws without rest, and God is pictured not at a distance but with a hand on his collar, throwing him into mud and driving him before the wind. Job cries for help and receives only a look; the destination, he says, is death, the place appointed for all the living.

A harp with nothing cheerful left in itvv. 24–31

Job's complaint turns outward once more: he had wept for the troubled and grieved for the needy, yet his hoped-for good has produced evil and his expected light has become darkness. He stands blackened in the assembly, paired in his desolation with jackals and ostriches, while his skin peels and his bones burn. The final alteration is musical and perfectly grim: the harp and flute still exist, but both have been assigned mourning.
