The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

Eliphaz advises a magnificent exchange: throw gold into dust and ravines, and the Almighty will become the gold instead.

An accusation beneath the starsvv. 1–20

Eliphaz begins with a string of questions about whether human righteousness can profit God, then turns sharply to charges against Job: taking security from brothers, leaving the naked unclothed, the weary without water, the hungry without food, and widows and fatherless people without help. Snares, darkness, flood, and sudden peril follow like a rather over-equipped punishment. The ancient wicked, meanwhile, vanish beneath a flood after asking what the Almighty can do; Eliphaz refuses their counsel, though he says God had filled their houses with good things.

Gold into the ravinesvv. 21–30

Eliphaz now offers restoration: return to the Almighty, remove injustice, and receive instruction. The treasure is to be thrown away—ordinary gold, and even the gold of Ophir, consigned to dust and the stones of ravines—so that the Almighty may become Job’s gold and finest silver. Then prayer will be heard, vows fulfilled, decisions carried out, and light will shine on his ways. The final promise is wonderfully broad: even one who is not innocent may be delivered through the cleanness of Job’s hands.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
