Job cannot find God anywhere, yet God knows exactly where Job has been.
The case he would bringvv. 1–7
Job wants the whereabouts of God not for a pilgrimage but for an appointment before the bench. He would go to His seat, produce a mouthful of arguments, listen to the answer, and discover that the great Judge would, surprisingly, take note of him. The hoped-for ending is not victory in the ordinary sense, but release: an upright man reasoning with God and coming away delivered.
Four directions and one witnessvv. 8–12
Job searches east and west, then north and south, with God eluding him in every quarter. Yet the absent figure is not absent-minded: God knows the road Job has taken. Job, for his part, presents his record—feet in the tracks, no turning aside, and the words of God's mouth treasured above daily bread. The geography is baffling; the moral itinerary, Job insists, is not.
The darkness does not get the last wordvv. 13–17
The argument changes shape. God is unchangeable, His decree stands, and His plans are many; Job's confidence in his own path now sits beside terror in God's presence. His heart faints, the Almighty terrifies him, and thick darkness covers his face. Still, Job is not silenced—which is a modest but important defiance in a passage otherwise full of vanishing directions.

Job 23:2“Even today my complaint is bitter. His hand is heavy despite my groaning.
Job 23:3If only I knew where to find Him, so that I could go to His seat.
Job 23:4I would plead my case before Him and fill my mouth with arguments.
Job 23:5I would learn how He would answer, and consider what He would say.
Job 23:6Would He contend with me in His great power? No, He would certainly take note of me.
Job 23:7Then an upright man could reason with Him, and I would be delivered forever from my Judge.
Job 23:8If I go east, He is not there, and if I go west, I cannot find Him.
Job 23:9When He is at work in the north, I cannot behold Him; when He turns to the south, I cannot see Him.
Job 23:10Yet He knows the way I have taken; when He has tested me, I will come forth as gold.
Job 23:11My feet have followed in His tracks; I have kept His way without turning aside.
Job 23:12I have not departed from the command of His lips; I have treasured the words of His mouth more than my daily bread.
Job 23:13But He is unchangeable, and who can oppose Him? He does what He desires.
Job 23:14For He carries out His decree against me, and He has many such plans.
Job 23:15Therefore I am terrified in His presence; when I consider this, I fear Him.
Job 23:16God has made my heart faint; the Almighty has terrified me.
Job 23:17Yet I am not silenced by the darkness, by the thick darkness that covers my face.’’

Who else the chapter reaches
Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.
Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
