The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

The prophets investigated the grace they themselves foretold, only to learn that their work was meant for later people—and now even angels are craning a heavenly neck to see what became of it.

A salvation that kept its audience secretvv. 1–12

Peter addresses the elect scattered through Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, naming their hope, inheritance, trials, and faith in Jesus Christ, whom they have not seen. Their faith is declared more precious than gold, which is rather surprisingly described as perishable even after surviving the furnace. Then the prophets appear, searching their own predictions for the time and circumstances of Christ’s sufferings and ensuing glory. The revelation came that they were serving not themselves but later hearers; the preachers announced these things by the Holy Spirit, and even angels long to peer into them.

The enduring word and the brief flowersvv. 13–25

Peter turns from describing salvation to calling for a certain kind of life: minds prepared, judgment sober, hope fixed on the grace to come, and holiness patterned after the holiness of the one who called. The redemption in view was not bought with silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or spot, known before the foundation of the world and revealed for their sake. Through him, faith and hope rest in God, and the purified are told to love one another deeply. Human glory then receives a brisk botanical comparison: grass withers, flowers fall, but the word of the Lord stands forever.

  1. 1 Pet 1:1Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To the elect who are exiles of the Dispersion throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, chosen

  2. 1 Pet 1:2according to the foreknowledge of God the Father and sanctified by the Spirit for obedience to Jesus Christ and sprinkling by His blood: Grace and peace be yours in abundance.

  3. 1 Pet 1:3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By His great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

  4. 1 Pet 1:4and into an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, reserved in heaven for you,

  5. 1 Pet 1:5who through faith are shielded by God’s power for the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.

  6. 1 Pet 1:6In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in various trials

  7. 1 Pet 1:7so that the proven character of your faith—more precious than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

  8. 1 Pet 1:8Though you have not seen Him, you love Him; and though you do not see Him now, you believe in Him and rejoice with an inexpressible and glorious joy,

  9. 1 Pet 1:9now that you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

  10. 1 Pet 1:10Concerning this salvation, the prophets who foretold the grace to come to you searched and investigated carefully,

  11. 1 Pet 1:11trying to determine the time and setting to which the Spirit of Christ in them was pointing when He predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories to follow.

  12. 1 Pet 1:12It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves, but you, when they foretold the things now announced by those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Even angels long to look into these things.

  13. 1 Pet 1:13Therefore prepare your minds for action. Be sober-minded. Set your hope fully on the grace to be given you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

  14. 1 Pet 1:14As obedient children, do not conform to the passions of your former ignorance.

  15. 1 Pet 1:15But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do,

  16. 1 Pet 1:16for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”

  17. 1 Pet 1:17Since you call on a Father who judges each one’s work impartially, conduct yourselves in reverent fear during your stay as foreigners.

  18. 1 Pet 1:18For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life you inherited from your forefathers,

  19. 1 Pet 1:19but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or spot.

  20. 1 Pet 1:20He was known before the foundation of the world, but was revealed in the last times for your sake.

  21. 1 Pet 1:21Through Him you believe in God, who raised Him from the dead and glorified Him; and so your faith and hope are in God.

  22. 1 Pet 1:22Since you have purified your souls by obedience to the truth so that you have a genuine love for your brothers, love one another deeply, from a pure heart.

  23. 1 Pet 1:23For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.

  24. 1 Pet 1:24For, “All flesh is like grass, and all its glory like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall,

  25. 1 Pet 1:25but the word of the Lord stands forever.” And this is the word that was proclaimed to you.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
