Psalms 72

Every verse links to the people and places named in it, and to the passages readers connect it with.

The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

Solomon is named at the door, David son of Jesse at the exit, and the psalm declines to explain the change of furniture.

A king under a very large skyvv. 1–17

The prayer asks God to furnish the king and his son with justice, then gives the king a splendidly demanding brief: judge the afflicted, save the children of the needy, crush the oppressor, and rule from sea to sea. The mountains are to bring peace, the hills righteousness, and the king is to arrive upon the land like rain on freshly cut grass—an agreeable sort of monarch, if a rather meteorological one. His reach runs from the Euphrates to the ends of the earth; kings from Tarshish, Sheba, and Seba bring tribute, while the needy and oppressed find in him a deliverer. Grain rises on the hills, fruit trees flourish like the forests of Lebanon, and his name is wished a life as long as the sun.

The blessing and the curious postscriptvv. 18–20

The voice turns from the king to the LORD God of Israel, blessing the God who alone does marvelous deeds, then asking that the whole earth be filled with His glory. Amen and amen. And then comes the small, remarkable label at the bottom: these are said to be the prayers of David son of Jesse, though the opening has said, simply, “Of Solomon.” The psalm leaves the two names standing together, without a little explanatory footnote to escort either of them away.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
