Ezra 2

Every verse links to the people and places named in it, and to the passages readers connect it with.

The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

A census pauses over the number 666, then becomes unexpectedly fussy about family paperwork: men who cannot prove priestly descent are barred from the priesthood and told to wait for a priest with the Urim and Thummim. The return is orderly, but not, one might say, without administrative drama.

The return, counted by family and townvv. 1–35

The people come up from captivity in Babylon, carried there by Nebuchadnezzar, and return to Jerusalem and Judah, each to his own town. Zerubbabel and ten companions lead the way, after which the roll proceeds by descendants, local men, and totals—until Adonikam's 666 sits in the list with no explanation whatsoever. The arithmetic is solemn; the odd little number is simply allowed to be odd.

When the papers are not in ordervv. 36–63

The list changes register: priests, Levites, singers, gatekeepers, temple servants, and the descendants of Solomon's servants are counted separately. Then come people from Tel-melah, Tel-harsha, Cherub, Addan, and Immer who cannot prove that their families are descended from Israel. Among the priests, the descendants of Hobaiah, Hakkoz, and Barzillai are especially delicate cases: one family carries the name because a man married a daughter of Barzillai the Gileadite. Yet the records cannot be found, so the men are excluded from the priesthood as unclean and forbidden the most holy things until a priest can consult the Urim and Thummim. A family name may travel by marriage; priestly status, here, wants its papers.

The assembly arrives and settlesvv. 64–70

The whole assembly numbers 42,360, with servants, singers, horses, mules, camels, and donkeys accompanying the return. At the house of the LORD in Jerusalem, some family heads give freewill offerings for rebuilding the house of God on its original site: 61,000 darics of gold, 5,000 minas of silver, and 100 priestly garments. Then the various temple and household servants, along with some of the people, settle in their towns, while the rest of the Israelites settle in theirs. The great movement ends in a great deal of settling down.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.
