The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

After the land has been measured into an astonishingly orderly quilt of portions, the city receives twelve gates—and then, rather grandly, a four-word name: THE LORD IS THERE.

The land is laid out in bandsvv. 1–14

Dan begins at the northern frontier, with each tribe thereafter taking its long east-to-west strip: Asher beside Dan, Naphtali beside Asher, Manasseh beside Naphtali, Ephraim beside Manasseh, Reuben beside Ephraim, and Judah beside Reuben. Against Judah lies the set-apart portion, with the sanctuary in its centre. The priests receive the holy middle, while the Levites receive the adjoining tract, and neither is to sell or exchange its land—a sensible precaution when the measurements are already doing nearly all the talking.

A city in the middle, and a prince on either sidevv. 15–29

The ordinary land sits within the holy arrangement for houses, pasture, and the city itself. Its surrounding fields produce food for the city workers, who come from all the tribes of Israel. The whole holy-and-city portion is square, while the remaining land east and west belongs to the prince, placing the city property and the Levitical property between Judah and Benjamin. Southward, Gad's border runs from Tamar to Meribath-kadesh, along the Brook of Egypt, and out to the Great Sea; the allotment is then declared an inheritance for the tribes of Israel.

The wall changes the roll callvv. 30–35

The city's four sides are each 4,500 cubits long, and each side has three gates. On the north are Reuben, Judah, and Levi; on the east, Joseph, Benjamin, and Dan; on the south, Simeon, Issachar, and Zebulun; on the west, Gad, Asher, and Naphtali. The land had spoken in terms of Manasseh and Ephraim, and of priestly property for the Levites; the wall, with a delightful disregard for the filing system, brings Joseph and Levi to the front gate. Then the perimeter is counted, and the city is given its name.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.
