The rivers are told to clap their hands, while the mountains are summoned to sing together for joy; the sea, meanwhile, is expected to resound with everything in it.
Victory rememberedvv. 1–3
A new song is called for because the LORD has done wonders, and victory belongs to His right hand and holy arm. His salvation and righteousness are shown to the nations, while His love and faithfulness toward Israel are remembered. The news does not stay at home: all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of their God.
The grand uproarvv. 4–9
The summons widens into a magnificent commotion. The earth is to cry out; lyre, harp, trumpets, and the ram’s horn join in; then the sea and its contents, the world and its inhabitants, are called into the noise. Rivers clap, mountains sing, and all this exuberance takes place before the LORD, who comes to judge the earth with righteousness and the peoples with equity.
