The chapter
What happens here
Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.
Jerusalem is told that it was sold for nothing and will be redeemed without money—a transaction in which neither side is given a price, which is a wonderfully economical arrangement.
Jerusalem shakes off its dustvv. 1–6
Zion is summoned to wake, dress in splendour, shake off its dust, and rise to the throne. The captive Daughter of Zion is to remove the chains from her neck, while Jerusalem receives the peculiar account of its captivity: the people went down to Egypt to live, Assyria oppressed them without cause, and now their rulers taunt them while the LORD’s name is blasphemed. Yet the sale had no price, and the redemption will have none either. At the end of this speech, the LORD simply says, “Here I am!”
The feet on the mountainsvv. 7–12
Good news arrives on the mountains on beautiful feet, carrying peace, good tidings, salvation, and the announcement that Zion’s God reigns. The watchmen answer one another with raised voices and shouts of joy; even Jerusalem’s ruins are invited to sing. Then comes the order to depart and touch nothing unclean—but the departure is expressly not a hurried one. No frantic flight here: the LORD goes before the people, and the God of Israel keeps the rear.
The Servant lifted highvv. 13–15
The scene turns to the Servant, who will prosper and be raised, lifted up, and highly exalted. Yet many were appalled at his disfigured appearance and marred form. The final image is larger still: he will sprinkle many nations, kings will fall silent, and they will see and understand what had not been told or heard.

Isa 52:1Awake, awake, clothe yourself with strength, O Zion! Put on your garments of splendor, O Jerusalem, holy city! For the uncircumcised and unclean will no longer enter you.
Isa 52:2Shake off your dust! Rise up and sit on your throne, O Jerusalem. Remove the chains from your neck, O captive Daughter of Zion.
Isa 52:3For this is what the LORD says: “You were sold for nothing, and without money you will be redeemed.”
Isa 52:4For this is what the Lord GOD says: “At first My people went down to Egypt to live, then Assyria oppressed them without cause.
Isa 52:5And now what have I here? declares the LORD. For My people have been taken without cause; those who rule them taunt, declares the LORD, and My name is blasphemed continually all day long.
Isa 52:6Therefore My people will know My name; therefore they will know on that day that I am He who speaks. Here I am!”
Isa 52:7How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, “Your God reigns!”
Isa 52:8Listen! Your watchmen lift up their voices, together they shout for joy. For every eye will see when the LORD returns to Zion.
Isa 52:9Break forth in joy, sing together, O ruins of Jerusalem, for the LORD has comforted His people; He has redeemed Jerusalem.
Isa 52:10The LORD has bared His holy arm in the sight of all the nations; all the ends of the earth will see the salvation of our God.
Isa 52:11Depart, depart, go out from there! Touch no unclean thing; come out from it, purify yourselves, you who carry the vessels of the LORD.
Isa 52:12For you will not leave in a hurry nor flee in haste, for the LORD goes before you, and the God of Israel is your rear guard.
Isa 52:13Behold, My Servant will prosper; He will be raised and lifted up and highly exalted.
Isa 52:14Just as many were appalled at Him—His appearance was disfigured beyond that of any man, and His form was marred beyond human likeness—
Isa 52:15so He will sprinkle many nations. Kings will shut their mouths because of Him. For they will see what they have not been told, and they will understand what they have not heard.
