Every verse links to the people and places named in it, and to the passages readers connect it with.

The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

The nations are each charged with “three transgressions, even four,” yet each indictment opens only one wound; the fourth remains rather mysteriously in the wings.

The shepherd and the roarvv. 1–2

Amos is introduced as a sheepherder of Tekoa, seeing concerning Israel in the reigns of Uzziah and Jeroboam, two years before an earthquake that the chapter declines to describe. Then the LORD roars from Zion, and even the pastures mourn; Carmel, too, is left to wither under the sound.

The circle of firevv. 3–15

The voice moves round the surrounding peoples, naming Damascus, Gaza, Tyre, Edom, and the Ammonites. Each has its single stated offense: iron sledges on Gilead, the trafficking of exiles, a broken covenant, a brother pursued without compassion, and pregnant women ripped open for territory. Each receives fire, with rulers and citadels swept into the same grim procession; the Ammonite king and his princes are the last to go into exile.

  1. Amos 1:1These are the words of Amos, who was among the sheepherders of Tekoa—what he saw concerning Israel two years before the earthquake, in the days when Uzziah was king of Judah and Jeroboam son of Jehoash was king of Israel.

  2. Amos 1:2He said: “The LORD roars from Zion and raises His voice from Jerusalem; the pastures of the shepherds mourn, and the summit of Carmel withers.”

  3. Amos 1:3This is what the LORD says: “For three transgressions of Damascus, even four, I will not revoke My judgment, because they threshed Gilead with sledges of iron.

  4. Amos 1:4So I will send fire upon the house of Hazael to consume the citadels of Ben-hadad.

  5. Amos 1:5I will break down the gates of Damascus; I will cut off the ruler from the Valley of Aven and the one who wields the scepter in Beth-eden. The people of Aram will be exiled to Kir,” says the LORD.

  6. Amos 1:6This is what the LORD says: “For three transgressions of Gaza, even four, I will not revoke My judgment, because they exiled a whole population, delivering them up to Edom.

  7. Amos 1:7So I will send fire upon the walls of Gaza, to consume its citadels.

  8. Amos 1:8I will cut off the ruler of Ashdod and the one who wields the scepter in Ashkelon. I will turn My hand against Ekron, and the remnant of the Philistines will perish,” says the Lord GOD.

  9. Amos 1:9This is what the LORD says: “For three transgressions of Tyre, even four, I will not revoke My judgment, because they delivered up a whole congregation of exiles to Edom and broke a covenant of brotherhood.

  10. Amos 1:10So I will send fire upon the walls of Tyre to consume its citadels.”

  11. Amos 1:11This is what the LORD says: “For three transgressions of Edom, even four, I will not revoke My judgment, because he pursued his brother with the sword and stifled all compassion; his anger raged continually, and his fury flamed incessantly.

  12. Amos 1:12So I will send fire upon Teman to consume the citadels of Bozrah.”

  13. Amos 1:13This is what the LORD says: “For three transgressions of the Ammonites, even four, I will not revoke My judgment, because they ripped open the pregnant women of Gilead in order to enlarge their territory.

  14. Amos 1:14So I will kindle a fire in the walls of Rabbah to consume its citadels amid war cries on the day of battle and a violent wind on the day of tempest.

  15. Amos 1:15Their king will go into exile—he and his princes together,” says the LORD.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
