The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

A day arrives with neither day nor night, yet evening brings light; and, as if that were not unusual enough, Jerusalem’s cooking pots become altar-like vessels for cooking.

The mountain opens and the city remainsvv. 1–11

The chapter begins with Jerusalem captured, looted, and partly emptied while the nations gather for battle. Then the LORD enters the scene as a combatant: His feet stand on the Mount of Olives, which splits from east to west and makes a valley. People flee through it as they once fled in the days of Uzziah, right out to Azal. The light behaves oddly—neither day nor night, and then light at evening—while living water runs from Jerusalem toward both seas in every season. The land is levelled from Geba to Rimmon, but Jerusalem is raised and held in place between its gates and towers, where people live securely.

Plagues, pilgrims, and splendidly holy cookwarevv. 12–21

The attacking peoples are struck while still standing: flesh, eyes, and tongues all rot in place. Panic makes them seize one another, Judah fights at Jerusalem, and the wealth of the surrounding nations is gathered in abundance. The survivors then go up year after year to worship the King and celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles; those who do not go receive no rain, with Egypt singled out for special mention. At the end, holiness spreads from the bells of horses to every cooking pot in Jerusalem and Judah. The pots are compared with the bowls before the altar, yet those who sacrifice take them away to cook in. It is a remarkably domestic conclusion to a chapter of mountains splitting and armies dissolving.

  1. Zech 14:1Behold, a day of the LORD is coming when your plunder will be divided in your presence.

  2. Zech 14:2For I will gather all the nations for battle against Jerusalem, and the city will be captured, the houses looted, and the women ravished. Half of the city will go into exile, but the rest of the people will not be removed from the city.

  3. Zech 14:3Then the LORD will go out to fight against those nations, as He fights in the day of battle.

  4. Zech 14:4On that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, east of Jerusalem, and the Mount of Olives will be split in two from east to west, forming a great valley, with half the mountain moving to the north and half to the south.

  5. Zech 14:5You will flee by My mountain valley, for it will extend to Azal. You will flee as you fled from the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah. Then the LORD my God will come, and all the holy ones with Him.

  6. Zech 14:6On that day there will be no light, no cold or frost.

  7. Zech 14:7It will be a unique day known only to the LORD, without day or night; but when evening comes, there will be light.

  8. Zech 14:8And on that day living water will flow out from Jerusalem, half of it toward the Eastern Sea and the other half toward the Western Sea, in summer and winter alike.

  9. Zech 14:9On that day the LORD will become King over all the earth—the LORD alone, and His name alone.

  10. Zech 14:10All the land from Geba to Rimmon south of Jerusalem will be turned into a plain, but Jerusalem will be raised up and will remain in her place, from the Benjamin Gate to the site of the First Gate to the Corner Gate, and from the Tower of Hananel to the royal winepresses.

  11. Zech 14:11People will live there, and never again will there be an utter destruction. So Jerusalem will dwell securely.

  12. Zech 14:12And this will be the plague with which the LORD strikes all the peoples who have warred against Jerusalem: Their flesh will rot while they stand on their feet, their eyes will rot in their sockets, and their tongues will rot in their mouths.

  13. Zech 14:13On that day a great panic from the LORD will come upon them, so that each will seize the hand of another, and the hand of one will rise against the other.

  14. Zech 14:14Judah will also fight at Jerusalem, and the wealth of all the surrounding nations will be collected—gold, silver, and apparel in great abundance.

  15. Zech 14:15And a similar plague will strike the horses and mules, camels and donkeys, and all the animals in those camps.

  16. Zech 14:16Then all the survivors from the nations that came against Jerusalem will go up year after year to worship the King, the LORD of Hosts, and to celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles.

  17. Zech 14:17And should any of the families of the earth not go up to Jerusalem to worship the King, the LORD of Hosts, then the rain will not fall on them.

  18. Zech 14:18And if the people of Egypt will not go up and enter in, then the rain will not fall on them; this will be the plague with which the LORD strikes the nations who do not go up to celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles.

  19. Zech 14:19This will be the punishment of Egypt and of all the nations that do not go up to celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles.

  20. Zech 14:20On that day, HOLY TO THE LORD will be inscribed on the bells of the horses, and the cooking pots in the house of the LORD will be like the sprinkling bowls before the altar.

  21. Zech 14:21Indeed, every pot in Jerusalem and Judah will be holy to the LORD of Hosts, and all who sacrifice will come and take some pots and cook in them. And on that day there will no longer be a Canaanite in the house of the LORD of Hosts.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.
