The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

Smyrna is told that its tribulation will last ten days—an oddly exact little measure, with no reason supplied for it.

Ephesus: the lampstand and the first lovevv. 1–7

The church in Ephesus is praised for labor, perseverance, endurance, and the testing of false apostles. Yet beneath this admirable inventory lies the charge that it has abandoned its first love; the remedy is to remember, repent, and return to its earlier deeds, or lose its lampstand. Its hatred of the works of the Nicolaitans is counted in its favour. The reward offered to the one who overcomes is fruit from the tree of life in the Paradise of God.

Smyrna: poverty, riches, and ten daysvv. 8–11

The church in Smyrna is known in its affliction and poverty, though it is called rich. Slander is named, prison is announced, and tribulation is assigned the peculiar duration of ten days. Faithfulness unto death is met with the crown of life, while the one who overcomes will not be harmed by the second death.

Pergamum: a faithful witness and a hidden stonevv. 12–17

Pergamum is described as the place where Satan's throne sits, yet its church holds fast to the name and does not deny the faith, even when Antipas is killed there. The difficulty is internal: some hold to the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to place a stumbling block before the Israelites, and some hold to the teaching of the Nicolaitans. Repentance is demanded, with war by the sword of the mouth as the alternative. The victor receives hidden manna and a white stone bearing a new name known only to its recipient—a reward with its own small locked cupboard.

Thyatira: greater deeds, and Jezebel's teachingvv. 18–29

The church in Thyatira has love, faith, service, perseverance, and latest deeds greater than its first. Its offence is tolerating Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess and misleads the servants into sexual immorality and eating food sacrificed to idols. She has been given time to repent and is unwilling; sickness, tribulation, and death are consequently spoken over her and those with her, while the churches are to know the One who searches minds and hearts. The rest in Thyatira are given no further burden beyond holding fast. The one who overcomes and continues in the work receives authority over the nations and the morning star.

  1. Rev 2:1“To the angel of the church in Ephesus write: These are the words of Him who holds the seven stars in His right hand and walks among the seven golden lampstands.

  2. Rev 2:2I know your deeds, your labor, and your perseverance. I know that you cannot tolerate those who are evil, and you have tested and exposed as liars those who falsely claim to be apostles.

  3. Rev 2:3Without growing weary, you have persevered and endured many things for the sake of My name.

  4. Rev 2:4But I have this against you: You have abandoned your first love.

  5. Rev 2:5Therefore, keep in mind how far you have fallen. Repent and perform the deeds you did at first. But if you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place.

  6. Rev 2:6But you have this to your credit: You hate the works of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate.

  7. Rev 2:7He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who overcomes, I will grant the right to eat from the tree of life in the Paradise of God.

  8. Rev 2:8To the angel of the church in Smyrna write: These are the words of the First and the Last, who died and returned to life.

  9. Rev 2:9I know your affliction and your poverty—though you are rich! And I am aware of the slander of those who falsely claim to be Jews, but are in fact a synagogue of Satan.

  10. Rev 2:10Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison to test you, and you will suffer tribulation for ten days. Be faithful even unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.

  11. Rev 2:11He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. The one who overcomes will not be harmed by the second death.

  12. Rev 2:12To the angel of the church in Pergamum write: These are the words of the One who holds the sharp, double-edged sword.

  13. Rev 2:13I know where you live, where the throne of Satan sits, yet you hold fast to My name. You did not deny your faith in Me, even in the days of My faithful witness Antipas, who was killed among you where Satan dwells.

  14. Rev 2:14But I have a few things against you, because some of you hold to the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to place a stumbling block before the Israelites so they would eat food sacrificed to idols and commit sexual immorality.

  15. Rev 2:15In the same way, some of you also hold to the teaching of the Nicolaitans.

  16. Rev 2:16Therefore repent! Otherwise I will come to you shortly and wage war against them with the sword of My mouth.

  17. Rev 2:17He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who overcomes, I will give the hidden manna. I will also give him a white stone inscribed with a new name, known only to the one who receives it.

  18. Rev 2:18To the angel of the church in Thyatira write: These are the words of the Son of God, whose eyes are like a blazing fire and whose feet are like polished bronze.

  19. Rev 2:19I know your deeds—your love, your faith, your service, your perseverance—and your latest deeds are greater than your first.

  20. Rev 2:20But I have this against you: You tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess. By her teaching she misleads My servants to be sexually immoral and to eat food sacrificed to idols.

  21. Rev 2:21Even though I have given her time to repent of her immorality, she is unwilling.

  22. Rev 2:22Behold, I will cast her onto a bed of sickness, and those who commit adultery with her will suffer great tribulation unless they repent of her deeds.

  23. Rev 2:23Then I will strike her children dead, and all the churches will know that I am the One who searches minds and hearts, and I will repay each of you according to your deeds.

  24. Rev 2:24But I say to the rest of you in Thyatira, who do not hold to her teaching and have not learned the so-called deep things of Satan: I will place no further burden upon you

  25. Rev 2:25than to hold fast to what you have until I come.

  26. Rev 2:26And to the one who overcomes and continues in My work until the end, I will give authority over the nations.

  27. Rev 2:27He will rule them with an iron scepter and shatter them like pottery—just as I have received authority from My Father.

  28. Rev 2:28And I will give him the morning star.

  29. Rev 2:29He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’’

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
