The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

Judas is sent out with the others, given authority over unclean spirits, and named in the same breath as the one who betrayed Jesus.

The twelve are sentvv. 1–15

Jesus calls the twelve together and gives them authority over unclean spirits, disease, and sickness. The list is brisk and rather wonderfully unvarnished: Simon Peter and Andrew, James and John, and the rest—ending with Judas Iscariot, whose betrayal is already written beside his name. They are sent first toward the lost sheep of Israel, carrying neither purse nor spare tunic, and are to make their living by the welcome of worthy households. A house may receive peace, or lose it; a town may receive the message, or acquire a very light dusting of apostolic feet. Sodom and Gomorrah appear as the comparison reserved for the inhospitable town.

Sheep among wolves, sparrows under accountvv. 16–31

The commission now acquires wolves, councils, governors, kings, family betrayals, and the possibility of persecution from one town to the next. Jesus does not make the danger smaller; he gives the disciples a curious combination for meeting it—shrewd as snakes and innocent as doves—and promises that, when they are handed over, the words will be supplied. Then the scale shifts from governors to sparrows. Two birds have a price, the hairs of the head have a number, and fear is directed away from those who can kill the body toward the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

A sword, a cross, and a cup of watervv. 32–42

The speech turns from survival to allegiance. Jesus will acknowledge before his Father those who acknowledge him, and deny those who deny him. Peace is explicitly not the parcel being delivered: households may divide, and love of father, mother, son, or daughter may be placed below him. The disciple is to take up his cross and lose life for Jesus’ sake. Yet the final measure is tiny. Receiving a disciple, a prophet, or a righteous man brings its stated reward, and even a cup of cold water given to one of the little ones will not be forgotten.

  1. Matt 10:1And calling His twelve disciples to Him, Jesus gave them authority over unclean spirits, so that they could drive them out and heal every disease and sickness.

  2. Matt 10:2These are the names of the twelve apostles: first Simon, called Peter, and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John;

  3. Matt 10:3Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus;

  4. Matt 10:4Simon the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Jesus.

  5. Matt 10:5These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Do not go onto the road of the Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans.

  6. Matt 10:6Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel.

  7. Matt 10:7As you go, preach this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven is near.’

  8. Matt 10:8Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give.

  9. Matt 10:9Do not take along any gold or silver or copper in your belts.

  10. Matt 10:10Take no bag for the road, or second tunic, or sandals, or staff; for the worker is worthy of his provisions.

  11. Matt 10:11Whatever town or village you enter, find out who is worthy there and stay at his house until you move on.

  12. Matt 10:12As you enter the home, greet its occupants.

  13. Matt 10:13If the home is worthy, let your peace rest on it, but if it is not, let your peace return to you.

  14. Matt 10:14And if anyone will not welcome you or heed your words, shake the dust off your feet when you leave that home or town.

  15. Matt 10:15Truly I tell you, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town.

  16. Matt 10:16Behold, I am sending you out like sheep among wolves; therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.

  17. Matt 10:17But beware of men, for they will hand you over to their councils and flog you in their synagogues.

  18. Matt 10:18On My account you will be brought before governors and kings as witnesses to them and to the Gentiles.

  19. Matt 10:19But when they hand you over, do not worry about how to respond or what to say. In that hour you will be given what to say.

  20. Matt 10:20For it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.

  21. Matt 10:21Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; children will rise against their parents and have them put to death.

  22. Matt 10:22You will be hated by everyone because of My name, but the one who perseveres to the end will be saved.

  23. Matt 10:23When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next. Truly I tell you, you will not reach all the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.

  24. Matt 10:24A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master.

  25. Matt 10:25It is enough for a disciple to be like his teacher, and a servant like his master. If the head of the house has been called Beelzebul, how much more the members of his household!

  26. Matt 10:26So do not be afraid of them. For there is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, and nothing hidden that will not be made known.

  27. Matt 10:27What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the housetops.

  28. Matt 10:28Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Instead, fear the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

  29. Matt 10:29Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father.

  30. Matt 10:30And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.

  31. Matt 10:31So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.

  32. Matt 10:32Therefore everyone who confesses Me before men, I will also confess him before My Father in heaven.

  33. Matt 10:33But whoever denies Me before men, I will also deny him before My Father in heaven.

  34. Matt 10:34Do not assume that I have come to bring peace to the earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword.

  35. Matt 10:35For I have come to turn ‘a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.

  36. Matt 10:36A man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.’

  37. Matt 10:37Anyone who loves his father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me;

  38. Matt 10:38and anyone who does not take up his cross and follow Me is not worthy of Me.

  39. Matt 10:39Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.

  40. Matt 10:40He who receives you receives Me, and he who receives Me receives the One who sent Me.

  41. Matt 10:41Whoever receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and whoever receives a righteous man because he is a righteous man will receive a righteous man’s reward.

  42. Matt 10:42And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is My disciple, truly I tell you, he will never lose his reward.”

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
