The chapter
What happens here
Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.
Israel has been given great things, and now regards them as something strange—as though the law had arrived from a foreign country.
The horn and the calfvv. 1–6
The ram’s horn announces an eagle over the house of the LORD, while Israel cries out that it knows God. A more awkward scene follows: kings and princes have been set up without approval, silver and gold have been turned into idols, and Samaria’s calf is rejected as the work of a craftsman. The little god is not merely wrong; it is due to be broken into pieces.
Wind, whirlwind, and foreign entanglementsvv. 7–10
The harvest goes wrong at every stage. Wind is sown, a whirlwind is reaped, grain fails to become flour, and any possible crop is swallowed by foreigners. Israel is then swallowed up among the nations, going up to Assyria like a wild donkey on its own; Ephraim, in the chapter’s sudden turn of phrase, has hired lovers. Allies may be hired, but they are to be rounded up instead.
Strange law, refused sacrifice, burning citiesvv. 11–14
Ephraim’s many altars have multiplied sin rather than removed it. The great things of the law have become strange, sacrifices are eaten but not accepted, and the sins are remembered. Israel has forgotten its Maker while building palaces; Judah has multiplied fortified cities, which are promised a hotter fate than the calf: fire for their cities and their citadels.

Hos 8:1Put the ram’s horn to your lips! An eagle looms over the house of the LORD, because the people have transgressed My covenant and rebelled against My law.
Hos 8:3But Israel has rejected good; an enemy will pursue him.
Hos 8:4They set up kings, but not by Me. They make princes, but without My approval. With their silver and gold they make themselves idols, to their own destruction.
Hos 8:5He has rejected your calf, O Samaria. My anger burns against them. How long will they be incapable of innocence?
Hos 8:6For this thing is from Israel—a craftsman made it, and it is not God. It will be broken to pieces, that calf of Samaria.
Hos 8:7For they sow the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind. There is no standing grain; what sprouts fails to yield flour. Even if it should produce, the foreigners would swallow it up.
Hos 8:8Israel is swallowed up! Now they are among the nations like a worthless vessel.
Hos 8:9For they have gone up to Assyria like a wild donkey on its own. Ephraim has hired lovers.
Hos 8:10Though they hire allies among the nations, I will now round them up, and they will begin to diminish under the oppression of the king of princes.
Hos 8:11Though Ephraim multiplied the altars for sin, they became his altars for sinning.
Hos 8:12Though I wrote for them the great things of My law, they regarded them as something strange.
Hos 8:13Though they offer sacrifices as gifts to Me, and though they eat the meat, the LORD does not accept them. Now He will remember their iniquity and punish their sins: They will return to Egypt.
Hos 8:14Israel has forgotten his Maker and built palaces; Judah has multiplied its fortified cities. But I will send fire upon their cities, and it will consume their citadels.

Who else the chapter reaches
Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.
Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
