Hosea 6

Every verse links to the people and places named in it, and to the passages readers connect it with.

The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

On the way to Shechem, a band of priests lies in ambush and murders; the priesthood has acquired the manners of a roadside gang.

Words like lightningvv. 1–6

The chapter begins with a return to the LORD, who has torn and wounded, yet promises to heal and bind up. Restoration is given a wonderfully precise timetable—two days, then the third—though the reason for those intervals is left unsaid. The LORD will come like rain, while human loyalty vanishes like dew; then words do the cutting, and judgment flashes like lightning. What is wanted is mercy and knowledge, rather than sacrifice and burnt offerings.

The ambush on the roadvv. 7–10

The charge darkens. Like Adam, the people have broken covenant. Gilead is marked by blood, and a band of priests waits like raiders on the way to Shechem. In the house of Israel, Ephraim practises prostitution, and Israel is defiled: the holy office, the city, and the household are all caught in the same grim account.

A harvest appointedv. 11

Judah is not left outside the reckoning. A harvest is appointed for Judah, joined to the promise that the LORD will restore His people from captivity.

  1. Hos 6:1Come, let us return to the LORD. For He has torn us to pieces, but He will heal us; He has wounded us, but He will bind up our wounds.

  2. Hos 6:2After two days He will revive us; on the third day He will raise us up, that we may live in His presence.

  3. Hos 6:3So let us know—let us press on to know the LORD. As surely as the sun rises, He will appear; He will come to us like the rain, like the spring showers that water the earth.

  4. Hos 6:4What shall I do with you, O Ephraim? What shall I do with you, O Judah? For your loyalty is like a morning mist, like the early dew that vanishes.

  5. Hos 6:5Therefore I have hewn them by the prophets; I have slain them by the words of My mouth, and My judgments go forth like lightning.

  6. Hos 6:6For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.

  7. Hos 6:7But they, like Adam, have transgressed the covenant; there they were unfaithful to Me.

  8. Hos 6:8Gilead is a city of evildoers, tracked with footprints of blood.

  9. Hos 6:9Like raiders who lie in ambush, so does a band of priests; they murder on the way to Shechem; surely they have committed atrocities.

  10. Hos 6:10In the house of Israel I have seen a horrible thing: Ephraim practices prostitution there, and Israel is defiled.

  11. Hos 6:11Also for you, O Judah, a harvest is appointed, when I restore My people from captivity.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
