The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

Ephraim is joined to idols, and the next instruction is simply: leave him alone.

A land without knowledgevv. 1–14

The LORD brings a case against the people of the land, where truth, loving devotion, and knowledge of God have vanished beneath cursing, lying, murder, stealing, and adultery. The land itself mourns, while people, beasts, birds, and fish waste away together. Priests and people stumble in matching fashion; the priests feed on the people’s sins, and the people consult wooden idols and divining rods. Even sacrifice on the hills acquires the wonderfully ordinary motive that the shade of the oak, poplar, and terebinth is pleasant. The men then go off with prostitutes and offer sacrifices with shrine prostitutes, leaving the daughters and daughters-in-law to bear the visible scandal of a disorder the men have already made.

A warning at the forbidden placesvv. 15–19

Israel’s guilt is followed by a narrow warning to Judah: do not journey to Gilgal, do not go up to Beth-aven, and do not swear by the life of the LORD. Israel is as obstinate as a stubborn heifer, and the question of shepherding such a creature among lambs is left hanging in the meadow. Then comes the abrupt sentence about Ephraim, joined to idols and to be left alone. When the liquor is gone, the rulers turn to disgrace, and the whirlwind gathers the whole affair into its wings; even the sacrifices end in shame.

  1. Hos 4:1Hear the word of the LORD, O children of Israel, for the LORD has a case against the people of the land: “There is no truth, no loving devotion, and no knowledge of God in the land!

  2. Hos 4:2Cursing and lying, murder and stealing, and adultery are rampant; one act of bloodshed follows another.

  3. Hos 4:3Therefore the land mourns, and all who dwell in it will waste away with the beasts of the field and the birds of the air; even the fish of the sea disappear.

  4. Hos 4:4But let no man contend; let no man offer reproof; for your people are like those who contend with a priest.

  5. Hos 4:5You will stumble by day, and the prophet will stumble with you by night; so I will destroy your mother—

  6. Hos 4:6My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I will also reject you as My priests. Since you have forgotten the law of your God, I will also forget your children.

  7. Hos 4:7The more they multiplied, the more they sinned against Me; they exchanged their Glory for a thing of disgrace.

  8. Hos 4:8They feed on the sins of My people and set their hearts on iniquity.

  9. Hos 4:9And it shall be like people, like priest. I will punish both of them for their ways and repay them for their deeds.

  10. Hos 4:10They will eat but not be satisfied; they will be promiscuous but not multiply. For they have abandoned the LORD to give themselves

  11. Hos 4:11to promiscuity, wine, and new wine, which take away understanding.

  12. Hos 4:12My people consult their wooden idols, and their divining rods inform them. For a spirit of prostitution leads them astray and they have played the harlot against their God.

  13. Hos 4:13They sacrifice on the mountaintops and burn offerings on the hills, under oak, poplar, and terebinth, because their shade is pleasant. And so your daughters turn to prostitution and your daughters-in-law to adultery.

  14. Hos 4:14I will not punish your daughters when they prostitute themselves, nor your daughters-in-law when they commit adultery. For the men themselves go off with prostitutes and offer sacrifices with shrine prostitutes. So a people without understanding will come to ruin.

  15. Hos 4:15Though you prostitute yourself, O Israel, may Judah avoid such guilt! Do not journey to Gilgal, do not go up to Beth-aven, and do not swear on oath, ‘As surely as the LORD lives!’

  16. Hos 4:16For Israel is as obstinate as a stubborn heifer. Can the LORD now shepherd them like lambs in an open meadow?

  17. Hos 4:17Ephraim is joined to idols; leave him alone!

  18. Hos 4:18When their liquor is gone, they turn to prostitution; their rulers dearly love disgrace.

  19. Hos 4:19The whirlwind has wrapped them in its wings, and their sacrifices will bring them shame.’’

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
