The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

The people destined to judge angels bring their quarrels before unbelievers, while no one among them can arbitrate between brothers.

A courtroom too grand for ordinary quarrelsvv. 1–11

The saints are assigned the world as a bench and angels as an even loftier case, yet an everyday dispute sends one brother to law against another before unbelievers. The rebuke is deliciously severe: if lawsuits already mean defeat, being wronged or cheated would apparently be the nobler performance. Instead, the brothers cheat one another themselves. Then comes the stern catalogue of those who will not inherit God’s kingdom, followed by the startling turn: some of these people once belonged to that catalogue, but were washed, sanctified, and justified.

Permission, appetite, and the bodyvv. 12–20

A pair of slogans is brought out and promptly refused. Everything may be permissible, but not everything is beneficial, and permission must not become a master. Food and stomach are treated as a temporary arrangement, while the body is claimed for the Lord and destined for resurrection. From there the argument becomes wonderfully physical: bodies are members of Christ, joining them to a prostitute would make a single body, and the body itself is a temple of the Holy Spirit. The final price is not left vague: the body was bought, and God is to be glorified with it.

  1. 1 Cor 6:1If any of you has a grievance against another, how dare he go to law before the unrighteous instead of before the saints!

  2. 1 Cor 6:2Do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if you are to judge the world, are you not competent to judge trivial cases?

  3. 1 Cor 6:3Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more the things of this life!

  4. 1 Cor 6:4So if you need to settle everyday matters, do you appoint as judges those of no standing in the church?

  5. 1 Cor 6:5I say this to your shame. Is there really no one among you wise enough to arbitrate between his brothers?

  6. 1 Cor 6:6Instead, one brother goes to law against another, and this in front of unbelievers!

  7. 1 Cor 6:7The very fact that you have lawsuits among you means that you are thoroughly defeated already. Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be cheated?

  8. 1 Cor 6:8Instead, you yourselves cheat and do wrong, even against your own brothers!

  9. 1 Cor 6:9Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who submit to or perform homosexual acts,

  10. 1 Cor 6:10nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor verbal abusers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God.

  11. 1 Cor 6:11And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified, in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

  12. 1 Cor 6:12“Everything is permissible for me,” but not everything is beneficial. “Everything is permissible for me,” but I will not be mastered by anything.

  13. 1 Cor 6:13“Food for the stomach and the stomach for food,” but God will destroy them both. The body is not intended for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body.

  14. 1 Cor 6:14By His power God raised the Lord from the dead, and He will raise us also.

  15. 1 Cor 6:15Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never!

  16. 1 Cor 6:16Or don’t you know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, “The two will become one flesh.”

  17. 1 Cor 6:17But he who unites himself with the Lord is one with Him in spirit.

  18. 1 Cor 6:18Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a man can commit is outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body.

  19. 1 Cor 6:19Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;

  20. 1 Cor 6:20you were bought at a price. Therefore glorify God with your body.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
