The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

The chapter begins with a man condemning others and discovers, rather neatly, that the sentence has turned round and found him.

The judgment that comes backvv. 1–16

The person passing judgment has no excuse, because the very things condemned in others are being done by the judge. God’s judgment is based on truth, and kindness, tolerance, and patience are not permission to remain hard-hearted; they lead toward repentance. Deeds, rather than applause or ancestry, stand before the judgment: evil brings trouble and distress, good brings glory, honor, and peace, first for the Jew and then for the Greek. Even those without the law may do what it requires, while their consciences accuse or defend them. The secrets of men are to be judged through Christ Jesus.

The teacher on trialvv. 17–24

Then the argument turns to the person who calls himself a Jew, relies on the law, boasts in God, and imagines himself a guide, a light, an instructor, and a teacher. The splendid public curriculum is interrupted by a series of awkward questions: does the teacher teach himself? Does the preacher against stealing steal? Does the one forbidding adultery commit adultery? Does the one who abhors idols rob temples? The boast in the law becomes dishonor to God when the law is broken, with consequences reaching even among the Gentiles.

The inward markvv. 25–29

Circumcision is useful if the law is observed, but the sign can be rhetorically turned inside out: the circumcised lawbreaker has become uncircumcised, while the physically uncircumcised law-keeper may be regarded as circumcised and may condemn the written-code breaker. The final distinction is between outward appearance and inward reality. Circumcision is placed in the heart, by the Spirit rather than the written code, and its praise comes from God rather than from men.

  1. Rom 2:1You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on another. For on whatever grounds you judge the other, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things.

  2. Rom 2:2And we know that God’s judgment against those who do such things is based on truth.

  3. Rom 2:3So when you, O man, pass judgment on others, yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God’s judgment?

  4. Rom 2:4Or do you disregard the riches of His kindness, tolerance, and patience, not realizing that God’s kindness leads you to repentance?

  5. Rom 2:5But because of your hard and unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of wrath, when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed.

  6. Rom 2:6God “will repay each one according to his deeds.”

  7. Rom 2:7To those who by perseverance in doing good seek glory, honor, and immortality, He will give eternal life.

  8. Rom 2:8But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow wickedness, there will be wrath and anger.

  9. Rom 2:9There will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil, first for the Jew, then for the Greek;

  10. Rom 2:10but glory, honor, and peace for everyone who does good, first for the Jew, then for the Greek.

  11. Rom 2:11For God does not show favoritism.

  12. Rom 2:12All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin under the law will be judged by the law.

  13. Rom 2:13For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but it is the doers of the law who will be declared righteous.

  14. Rom 2:14Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law.

  15. Rom 2:15So they show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts either accusing or defending them

  16. Rom 2:16on the day when God will judge men’s secrets through Christ Jesus, as proclaimed by my gospel.

  17. Rom 2:17Now you, if you call yourself a Jew; if you rely on the law and boast in God;

  18. Rom 2:18if you know His will and approve of what is superior because you are instructed by the law;

  19. Rom 2:19if you are convinced that you are a guide for the blind, a light for those in darkness,

  20. Rom 2:20an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of infants, because you have in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth—

  21. Rom 2:21you, then, who teach others, do you not teach yourself? You who preach against stealing, do you steal?

  22. Rom 2:22You who forbid adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples?

  23. Rom 2:23You who boast in the law, do you dishonor God by breaking the law?

  24. Rom 2:24As it is written: “God’s name is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.”

  25. Rom 2:25Circumcision has value if you observe the law, but if you break the law, your circumcision has become uncircumcision.

  26. Rom 2:26If a man who is not circumcised keeps the requirements of the law, will not his uncircumcision be regarded as circumcision?

  27. Rom 2:27The one who is physically uncircumcised yet keeps the law will condemn you who, even though you have the written code and circumcision, are a lawbreaker.

  28. Rom 2:28A man is not a Jew because he is one outwardly, nor is circumcision only outward and physical.

  29. Rom 2:29No, a man is a Jew because he is one inwardly, and circumcision is a matter of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code. Such a man’s praise does not come from men, but from God.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
