Heaven falls silent for about half an hour, and then the silence is broken by trumpets, fire, blood, bitter water, darkness, and an eagle announcing three woes still to come.

Silence, incense, and firevv. 1–6

When the Lamb opens the seventh seal, heaven has an oddly measured pause: silence for about half an hour. Seven angels receive seven trumpets, while another angel brings a golden censer to the altar with incense and the prayers of all the saints. The smoke rises before God; then the censer, having been filled with fire from the altar, is hurled to the earth, producing thunder, rumblings, lightning, and an earthquake. The trumpets are ready.

Four trumpets and three woesvv. 7–13

The first trumpet burns a third of the earth, a third of the trees, and all the green grass—a notably uneven gardening disaster. The second throws something like a burning mountain into the sea, turning a third of it to blood and destroying a third of the ships. The third brings down the star Wormwood, and many die when a third of the waters become bitter. The fourth darkens a third of the sun, moon, and stars, leaving a third of day and night without light. Then an eagle flies overhead and cries, “Woe! Woe! Woe!” for the three trumpets still waiting their turn.
