Psalms 53

Every verse links to the people and places named in it, and to the passages readers connect it with.

The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

The workers of iniquity are seized by dread precisely where there is nothing to fear—a remarkably inconvenient location for terror.

A heavenward search and an earth gone crookedvv. 1–5

The heading arrives with three labels, including the unexplained “According to Mahalath,” and then the fool speaks in his heart. God looks down from heaven for anyone who understands or seeks him, but the search finds a universal turning away. The workers of iniquity devour God’s people like bread and refuse to call upon him; then, in the psalm’s strangest little scene, dread overtakes them where there was nothing to fear. Their bones are scattered, and shame does the rest.

Salvation awaited from Zionv. 6

The final turn is a longing rather than a report: salvation for Israel is desired from Zion. When God restores his captive people, Jacob is to rejoice and Israel to be glad; the psalm leaves the restoration in that future tense, with the gladness waiting just beyond the line.
