Every verse links to the people and places named in it, and to the passages readers connect it with.

The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

The rulers invoke the LORD with full confidence just before Zion is sentenced to ploughing, Jerusalem to rubble, and the temple mount to trees.

A cooking pot for justicevv. 1–4

The leaders of Jacob and rulers of Israel are summoned to know justice, though their conduct has wandered into a remarkably grim kitchen. They strip skin, flesh, and bones from the people, chop them up for the pot, and then discover that the LORD does not answer their cry. His face is hidden from them because of the evil they have done.

Peace, provided there is chewingvv. 5–8

The prophets lead the people astray according to a particularly exact arrangement of meals: peace is proclaimed while teeth are chewing, while war is declared against the person who has put nothing in the mouth. For these seers and diviners, night arrives without visions, the sun sets, and daylight turns black. They cover their mouths because there is no answer from God. Against them, the speaker stands filled with power, justice, and courage, declaring Jacob’s transgression and Israel’s sin.

The confident ruin of the cityvv. 9–12

The leaders despise justice and pervert what is right, building Zion with bloodshed and Jerusalem with iniquity. Leaders judge for bribes, priests teach for prices, and prophets practise divination for money; yet all lean upon the LORD and insist that no disaster can come. The answer is a splendidly thorough reversal: Zion becomes a ploughed field, Jerusalem a heap of rubble, and the temple mount a wooded ridge.

  1. Mic 3:1Then I said: “Hear now, O leaders of Jacob, you rulers of the house of Israel. Should you not know justice?

  2. Mic 3:2You hate good and love evil. You tear the skin from my people and strip the flesh from their bones.

  3. Mic 3:3You eat the flesh of my people after stripping off their skin and breaking their bones. You chop them up like flesh for the cooking pot, like meat in a cauldron.”

  4. Mic 3:4Then they will cry out to the LORD, but He will not answer them. At that time He will hide His face from them because of the evil they have done.

  5. Mic 3:5This is what the LORD says: “As for the prophets who lead My people astray, who proclaim peace while they chew with their teeth, but declare war against one who puts nothing in their mouths:

  6. Mic 3:6Therefore night will come over you without visions, and darkness without divination. The sun will set on these prophets, and the daylight will turn black over them.

  7. Mic 3:7Then the seers will be ashamed and the diviners will be disgraced. They will all cover their mouths because there is no answer from God.”

  8. Mic 3:8As for me, however, I am filled with power by the Spirit of the LORD, with justice and courage, to declare to Jacob his transgression and to Israel his sin.

  9. Mic 3:9Now hear this, O leaders of the house of Jacob and rulers of the house of Israel, who despise justice and pervert all that is right,

  10. Mic 3:10who build Zion with bloodshed and Jerusalem with iniquity.

  11. Mic 3:11Her leaders judge for a bribe, her priests teach for a price, and her prophets practice divination for money. Yet they lean upon the LORD, saying, “Is not the LORD among us? No disaster can come upon us.”

  12. Mic 3:12Therefore, because of you, Zion will be plowed like a field, Jerusalem will become a heap of rubble, and the temple mount a wooded ridge.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
