The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

The crowd becomes so dense that Jesus and His disciples cannot even eat, and His own family arrives to take custody of Him, saying He is out of His mind. It is a remarkably crowded way to be misunderstood.

A restored hand, and an immediate plotvv. 1–6

Jesus enters the synagogue where a man with a withered hand is waiting, while others watch for an opportunity to accuse Him. He brings the question into the middle of the room: whether the Sabbath permits good or evil, saving or destroying life. Silence follows; then the hand is restored. The Pharisees respond by leaving to plot with the Herodians how Jesus might be killed—a brisk turn from moral enquiry to murder.

The crowd, the mountain, and the Twelvevv. 7–19

Jesus withdraws to the sea, but the crowd follows from a remarkable sweep of country: Galilee, Judea, Jerusalem, Idumea, the region beyond the Jordan, and the vicinity of Tyre and Sidon. So many people press forward to touch Him that a boat must be kept ready lest He be crushed. Even the unclean spirits fall before Him and cry out, though Jesus sternly forbids them to make Him known. Then, on the mountain, He appoints twelve to accompany Him, preach, and drive out demons. The list concludes with Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Jesus; the ominous little tail on an otherwise formal roll-call is left standing there.

A house divided, and a family outsidevv. 20–35

Back at home, the crowd gathers so thickly that Jesus and His disciples cannot eat. His family comes to take custody of Him, declaring, “He is out of His mind,” while scribes from Jerusalem offer a darker explanation: He is possessed by Beelzebul. Jesus answers with the image of a kingdom, a house, and Satan himself divided against himself; none can stand. He then speaks of entering a strong man’s house only after tying him up, and of the unforgivable blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. Outside, His mother and brothers send for Him. Inside, Jesus looks round at those seated in a circle and names them as His mother and brothers: whoever does the will of God.

Berean Standard Bible, public domain. Names the Hebrew and Greek put in the verse link to the person, place or people they name; the address beside each verse is a link to that verse, which is what a reader copies and shares.

  1. Mark 3:1Once again Jesus entered the synagogue, and a man with a withered hand was there.

  2. Mark 3:2In order to accuse Jesus, they were watching to see if He would heal on the Sabbath.

  3. Mark 3:3Then Jesus said to the man with the withered hand, “Stand up among us.”

  4. Mark 3:4And He asked them, “Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?” But they were silent.

  5. Mark 3:5Jesus looked around at them with anger and sorrow at their hardness of heart. Then He said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” So he stretched it out, and it was restored.

  6. Mark 3:6At this, the Pharisees went out and began plotting with the Herodians how they might kill Jesus.

  7. Mark 3:7So Jesus withdrew with His disciples to the sea, accompanied by a large crowd from Galilee, Judea,

  8. Mark 3:8Jerusalem, Idumea, the region beyond the Jordan, and the vicinity of Tyre and Sidon. The large crowd came to Him when they heard what great things He was doing.

  9. Mark 3:9Jesus asked His disciples to have a boat ready for Him so that the crowd would not crush Him.

  10. Mark 3:10For He had healed so many that all who had diseases were pressing forward to touch Him.

  11. Mark 3:11And when the unclean spirits saw Him, they fell down before Him and cried out, “You are the Son of God!”

  12. Mark 3:12But He warned them sternly not to make Him known.

  13. Mark 3:13Then Jesus went up on the mountain and called for those He wanted, and they came to Him.

  14. Mark 3:14He appointed twelve of them, whom He designated as apostles, to accompany Him, to be sent out to preach,

  15. Mark 3:15and to have authority to drive out demons.

  16. Mark 3:16These are the twelve He appointed: Simon (whom He named Peter),

  17. Mark 3:17James son of Zebedee and his brother John (whom He named Boanerges, meaning “Sons of Thunder”),

  18. Mark 3:18Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot,

  19. Mark 3:19and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Jesus.

  20. Mark 3:20Then Jesus went home, and once again a crowd gathered, so that He and His disciples could not even eat.

  21. Mark 3:21When His family heard about this, they went out to take custody of Him, saying, “He is out of His mind.”

  22. Mark 3:22And the scribes who had come down from Jerusalem were saying, “He is possessed by Beelzebul,” and, “By the prince of the demons He drives out demons.”

  23. Mark 3:23So Jesus called them together and began to speak to them in parables: “How can Satan drive out Satan?

  24. Mark 3:24If a kingdom is divided against itself, it cannot stand.

  25. Mark 3:25If a house is divided against itself, it cannot stand.

  26. Mark 3:26And if Satan is divided and rises against himself, he cannot stand; his end has come.

  27. Mark 3:27Indeed, no one can enter a strong man’s house to steal his possessions unless he first ties up the strong man. Then he can plunder his house.

  28. Mark 3:28Truly I tell you, the sons of men will be forgiven all sins and blasphemies, as many as they utter.

  29. Mark 3:29But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; he is guilty of eternal sin.”

  30. Mark 3:30Jesus made this statement because they were saying, “He has an unclean spirit.”

  31. Mark 3:31Then Jesus’ mother and brothers came and stood outside. They sent someone in to summon Him,

  32. Mark 3:32and a crowd was sitting around Him. “Look,” He was told, “Your mother and brothers are outside, asking for You.”

  33. Mark 3:33But Jesus replied, “Who are My mother and My brothers?”

  34. Mark 3:34Looking at those seated in a circle around Him, He said, “Here are My mother and My brothers!

  35. Mark 3:35For whoever does the will of God is My brother and sister and mother.”

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
