What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

Jesus is taken up into heaven, and the disciples respond by staring after Him until two men in white appear beside them to ask why they are still looking into the sky. Then, after returning to Jerusalem, they replace Judas by prayer, a pair of candidates, and the casting of lots.

The cloud and the two men in whitevv. 1–14

The book opens with Theophilus and closes its opening movement with Jesus departing in a cloud. After His suffering, Jesus spends forty days appearing to the apostles and speaking about the kingdom of God, then tells them to remain in Jerusalem for the promised Holy Spirit. Their question about restoring the kingdom to Israel receives no timetable, only a widening map: Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and the ends of the earth. Jesus is taken up; the disciples look intently into the sky; and two men dressed in white arrive with the gently practical question of why they are still standing there. They return from the Mount of Olives to Jerusalem and gather in the upper room, where the named apostles, the women, Mary, and Jesus’ brothers continue in prayer.

A vacancy, two men, and one lotvv. 15–26

Peter stands among about a hundred and twenty and turns to the vacancy left by Judas. The account pauses for a remarkably vivid description: Judas bought a field, fell headlong, burst open, and gave the place its local name, Akeldama, or Field of Blood. Peter says the replacement must be someone who had accompanied them from John’s baptism until Jesus was taken up, and who could become a witness of His resurrection. Joseph called Barsabbas and Matthias are proposed. The group prays for the one chosen, then casts lots; the lot falls to Matthias, who is added to the eleven apostles. A prayer for the heart is followed by a small and quite definite throw of chance.

  1. Acts 1:1In my first book, O Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach,

  2. Acts 1:2until the day He was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles He had chosen.

  3. Acts 1:3After His suffering, He presented Himself to them with many convincing proofs that He was alive. He appeared to them over a span of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God.

  4. Acts 1:4And while they were gathered together, He commanded them: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift the Father promised, which you have heard Me discuss.

  5. Acts 1:5For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”

  6. Acts 1:6So when they came together, they asked Him, “Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?”

  7. Acts 1:7Jesus replied, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by His own authority.

  8. Acts 1:8But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

  9. Acts 1:9After He had said this, they watched as He was taken up, and a cloud hid Him from their sight.

  10. Acts 1:10They were looking intently into the sky as He was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them.

  11. Acts 1:11“Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen Him go into heaven.”

  12. Acts 1:12Then they returned to Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives, which is near the city, a Sabbath day’s journey away.

  13. Acts 1:13When they arrived, they went to the upper room where they were staying: Peter and John, James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James son of Alphaeus, Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James.

  14. Acts 1:14With one accord they all continued in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers.

  15. Acts 1:15In those days Peter stood up among the brothers (a gathering of about a hundred and twenty) and said,

  16. Acts 1:16“Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled that the Holy Spirit foretold through the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide for those who arrested Jesus.

  17. Acts 1:17He was one of our number and shared in this ministry.”

  18. Acts 1:18(Now with the reward for his wickedness Judas bought a field; there he fell headlong and burst open in the middle, and all his intestines spilled out.

  19. Acts 1:19This became known to all who lived in Jerusalem, so they called that field in their own language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.)

  20. Acts 1:20“For it is written in the book of Psalms: ‘May his place be deserted; let there be no one to dwell in it,’ and, ‘May another take his position.’

  21. Acts 1:21Therefore it is necessary to choose one of the men who have accompanied us the whole time the Lord Jesus went in and out among us,

  22. Acts 1:22beginning from John’s baptism until the day Jesus was taken up from us. For one of these must become a witness with us of His resurrection.”

  23. Acts 1:23So they proposed two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias.

  24. Acts 1:24And they prayed, “Lord, You know everyone’s heart. Show us which of these two You have chosen

  25. Acts 1:25to take up this ministry and apostleship, which Judas abandoned to go to his rightful place.”

  26. Acts 1:26Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias. So he was added to the eleven apostles.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
