Exodus 35

Every verse links to the people and places named in it, and to the passages readers connect it with.

The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

Among the gold, gemstones, incense, and acacia wood, the tabernacle receives its goat hair from women spinning it by hand—a very homely craft, given its place in the divine inventory.

A holy pause, then a willing offeringvv. 1–19

Moses gathers Israel and begins with the Sabbath: six days may bear work, but the seventh is holy, and even a household fire is forbidden. Then the building work is announced in astonishing detail—metals, yarns, skins, wood, oil, spices, stones, curtains, poles, bases, and garments for Aaron and his sons. The work is grand; the instructions are gloriously particular.

The craftsmen arrivevv. 20–35

Israel withdraws from Moses and returns with whatever willing hearts have stirred them to bring. Men and women offer jewellery, cloth, skins, metal, wood, oil, spices, and stones; the skilled women spin linen, coloured yarn, and goat hair. The leaders bring the stones and oils, while Moses names Bezalel son of Uri, son of Hur, of Judah, and Oholiab son of Ahisamach, of Dan. Bezalel is filled with skill for the work, and both men are given the ability to teach it—a workshop now furnished with materials, makers, and instructors.

  1. Exod 35:1Then Moses assembled the whole congregation of Israel and said to them, “These are the things that the LORD has commanded you to do:

  2. Exod 35:2For six days work may be done, but the seventh day shall be your holy day, a Sabbath of complete rest to the LORD. Whoever does any work on that day must be put to death.

  12. Exod 35:12the ark with its poles and mercy seat, and the veil to shield it;

  13. Exod 35:13the table with its poles, all its utensils, and the Bread of the Presence;

  20. Exod 35:20Then the whole congregation of Israel withdrew from the presence of Moses.

  21. Exod 35:21And everyone whose heart stirred him and whose spirit prompted him came and brought an offering to the LORD for the work on the Tent of Meeting, for all its services, and for the holy garments.

  23. Exod 35:23Everyone who had blue, purple, or scarlet yarn, or fine linen, goat hair, ram skins dyed red, or articles of fine leather, brought them.

  24. Exod 35:24And all who could present an offering of silver or bronze brought it as a contribution to the LORD. Also, everyone who had acacia wood for any part of the service brought it.

  25. Exod 35:25Every skilled woman spun with her hands and brought what she had spun: blue, purple, or scarlet yarn, or fine linen.

  26. Exod 35:26And all the skilled women whose hearts were stirred spun the goat hair.

  27. Exod 35:27The leaders brought onyx stones and gemstones to mount on the ephod and breastpiece,

  28. Exod 35:28as well as spices and olive oil for the light, for the anointing oil, and for the fragrant incense.

  29. Exod 35:29So all the men and women of the Israelites whose hearts prompted them brought a freewill offering to the LORD for all the work that the LORD through Moses had commanded them to do.

  30. Exod 35:30Then Moses said to the Israelites, “See, the LORD has called by name Bezalel son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah.

  31. Exod 35:31And He has filled him with the Spirit of God, with skill, ability, and knowledge in all kinds of craftsmanship,

  32. Exod 35:32to design artistic works in gold, silver, and bronze,

  33. Exod 35:33to cut gemstones for settings, and to carve wood, so that he may be a master of every artistic craft.

  35. Exod 35:35He has filled them with skill to do all kinds of work as engravers, designers, embroiderers in blue, purple, and scarlet yarn and fine linen, and as weavers—as artistic designers of every kind of craft.’’

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
