Exodus 33
Every verse links to the people and places named in it, and to the passages readers connect it with.
The chapter
What happens here
Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.
Moses leaves the Tent of Meeting, but Joshua stays behind. The chapter gives Joshua no explanation, which is a wonderfully abrupt little mystery in the middle of the cloud, the worship, and the conversation “face to face.”
The people remove their jewelryvv. 1–6
The LORD sends Moses and the Israelites onward toward the promised land, with an angel to drive out its peoples. The land flows with milk and honey, but the LORD will not go with them, lest their stiff-neckedness bring destruction on the way. Hearing this, the people mourn; then they strip off their jewelry from Mount Horeb onward, while the LORD leaves the question of what to do with them hanging in the air.
The tent outside the campvv. 7–11
Moses pitches the Tent of Meeting outside the camp, and the people watch from their own tent entrances whenever he goes there. The pillar of cloud comes down, the people worship, and the LORD speaks with Moses face to face, as one speaks with a friend. Moses returns to the camp; Joshua son of Nun does not leave the tent, and the chapter does not say why.
Moses asks for the Presence and the gloryvv. 12–23
Moses presses the LORD about who will go with the people, and refuses to let them leave unless the Presence goes with them. The LORD agrees, because Moses has found favor and is known by name. Then Moses asks to see the glory: the LORD promises that goodness will pass before him, but not the face. Moses is placed in a cleft of the rock, covered by the LORD’s hand, and allowed to see only the back after the glory has passed.

Exod 33:1Then the LORD said to Moses, “Leave this place, you and the people you brought up out of the land of Egypt, and go to the land that I promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob when I said, ‘I will give it to your descendants.’
Exod 33:2And I will send an angel before you, and I will drive out the Canaanites, Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites.
Exod 33:3Go up to a land flowing with milk and honey. But I will not go with you, because you are a stiff-necked people; otherwise, I might destroy you on the way.”
Exod 33:4When the people heard this bad news, they went into mourning, and no one put on any of his jewelry.
Exod 33:5For the LORD had said to Moses, “Tell the Israelites, ‘You are a stiff-necked people. If I should go with you for a single moment, I would destroy you. Now take off your jewelry, and I will decide what to do with you.’”
Exod 33:6So the Israelites stripped themselves of their jewelry from Mount Horeb onward.
Exod 33:7Now Moses used to take the tent and pitch it at a distance outside the camp. He called it the Tent of Meeting, and anyone inquiring of the LORD would go to the Tent of Meeting outside the camp.
Exod 33:8Then, whenever Moses went out to the tent, all the people would stand at the entrances to their own tents and watch Moses until he entered the tent.
Exod 33:9As Moses entered the tent, the pillar of cloud would come down and remain at the entrance, and the LORD would speak with Moses.
Exod 33:10When all the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the entrance to the tent, they would stand up and worship, each one at the entrance to his own tent.
Exod 33:11Thus the LORD would speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. Then Moses would return to the camp, but his young assistant Joshua son of Nun would not leave the tent.
Exod 33:12Then Moses said to the LORD, “Look, You have been telling me, ‘Lead this people up,’ but You have not let me know whom You will send with me. Yet You have said, ‘I know you by name, and you have found favor in My sight.’
Exod 33:13Now if indeed I have found favor in Your sight, please let me know Your ways, that I may know You and find favor in Your sight. Remember that this nation is Your people.”
Exod 33:14And the LORD answered, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”
Exod 33:15“If Your Presence does not go with us,” Moses replied, “do not lead us up from here.
Exod 33:16For how then can it be known that Your people and I have found favor in Your sight, unless You go with us? How else will we be distinguished from all the other people on the face of the earth?”
Exod 33:17So the LORD said to Moses, “I will do this very thing you have asked, for you have found favor in My sight, and I know you by name.”
Exod 33:18Then Moses said, “Please show me Your glory.”
Exod 33:19“I will cause all My goodness to pass before you,” the LORD replied, “and I will proclaim My name—the LORD—in your presence. I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.”
Exod 33:20But He added, “You cannot see My face, for no one can see Me and live.”
Exod 33:21The LORD continued, “There is a place near Me where you are to stand upon a rock,
Exod 33:22and when My glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft of the rock and cover you with My hand until I have passed by.
Exod 33:23Then I will take My hand away, and you will see My back; but My face must not be seen.”

Who else the chapter reaches
Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.
Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.
Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
