The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

Saul falls on his own sword when his terrified armor-bearer refuses to kill him, and the chapter later says that the LORD put him to death.

The battle on Gilboavv. 1–6

The Philistines drive Israel from the field, and Mount Gilboa becomes the place where Saul’s sons Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchishua fall. Saul is wounded by archers, then asks his armor-bearer to finish the matter before the Philistines can torture him. The armor-bearer cannot do it; Saul therefore takes his own sword, and the armor-bearer follows him into death. A grim little procession, with no room for a spare man at the end.

The spoils and the burialvv. 7–12

The Israelites in the valley abandon their cities, which the Philistines promptly occupy. On the following day, the Philistines find Saul and his sons on Mount Gilboa, strip Saul, cut off his head, and carry his armor and head to their temples. The people of Jabesh-gilead answer this spectacle with an expedition of their own: their men of valor retrieve the bodies, bring them to Jabesh, bury their bones beneath the oak, and fast for seven days.

The chapter’s final accountvv. 13–14

After all the battlefield detail, the chapter gives its final account of Saul’s death. It names his unfaithfulness: he did not keep the word of the LORD, consulted a medium, and failed to inquire of the LORD. Then comes the curious double description: Saul fell on his own sword, while the LORD put him to death and turned the kingdom over to David son of Jesse.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
