The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

An ear and an eye are summoned as evidence that their maker cannot possibly miss what happens below; then the argument advances to a teacher who cannot lack knowledge.

The boast of the wickedvv. 1–7

The psalm opens by calling on the God of vengeance to shine forth and on the Judge of the earth to answer the proud. The wicked are enjoying themselves rather noisily: arrogant words pour out, the vulnerable are crushed, and the LORD’s people are oppressed. Their theory is wonderfully convenient—that the LORD does not see and the God of Jacob pays no heed.

The lesson of the ear and the eyevv. 8–15

The senseless are invited to reconsider the equipment of creation. The one who affixed the ear can hear; the one who formed the eye can see; and the one who teaches man is hardly short of knowledge. The psalm then gives divine discipline an unexpected title: blessed. It is instruction from the law, granting relief while a pit is dug for the wicked. The LORD will not forsake His people, and judgment will again be righteous enough for the upright in heart to follow.

The throne that makes mischief lawvv. 16–23

The speaker asks who will rise against the workers of iniquity, then admits that without the LORD’s help the silence would already have received him. A slipping foot is steadied; anxiety is met with consolation. Then comes the chapter’s splendidly incompatible partnership: could a corrupt throne possibly be an ally of God while devising mischief by decree? No. It bands against the righteous, condemns the innocent, and finally meets its own iniquity, while the LORD remains stronghold and rock of refuge.
