A slacker is vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes of the people who send him—a wonderfully exact nuisance, though the proverb declines to describe the workplace.
Sons, hands, and mouthsvv. 1–10
Solomon begins with a household divided by its sons: wisdom brings joy to a father, folly grief to a mother. Treasure gained badly proves useless, while righteousness delivers from death; idle hands make poverty, diligent hands wealth, and the son who sleeps through harvest earns disgrace. Blessing rests on the righteous head, though violence lurks behind the wicked mouth. The righteous are remembered as a blessing, while the wicked name rots. A wise heart receives commandments, integrity gives a secure walk, and even a wink of the eye is credited with causing grief; the reason for that wink is left charmingly unprovided.
The great traffic of speechvv. 11–21
The mouth now becomes the chief thoroughfare. The righteous mouth is a fountain of life, hatred stirs dissension, and love covers transgressions; wisdom sits on discerning lips, while the fool's mouth invites destruction. Wealth fortifies the rich, poverty ruins the poor, and labor leads the righteous to life while wicked gain brings punishment. Instruction keeps a person on the path to life; concealed hatred speaks lies, slander makes a fool, and too many words make sin rather difficult to avoid. The righteous tongue is choice silver and the righteous lips feed many, whereas the foolish perish for lack of judgment.
Blessing, whirlwind, and the tongue's fatevv. 22–32
The blessing of the LORD enriches without adding sorrow, while the fool takes delight in shameful conduct. Fear overtakes the wicked in the very shape of what is feared; then the whirlwind passes, and the wicked are no more, while the righteous remain secure. Hope becomes joy for the righteous and perishes for the wicked. The way of the LORD is refuge to the upright, though destruction awaits those who do evil. The righteous are not shaken, their mouths bring forth wisdom, and their lips know what is fitting. The final image is admirably abrupt: a perverse tongue will be cut out, with neither executioner nor method supplied.
