What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

Fire comes out from the presence of the LORD, consumes the offering, and produces the chapter’s splendidly double response: the people shout for joy and fall facedown.

The offerings are brought nearvv. 1–7

On the eighth day, Moses summons Aaron, his sons, and the elders of Israel. Aaron is given a bull and a ram for himself; the Israelites are told to bring a goat, a calf, a lamb, an ox, a ram, and a grain offering mixed with oil. Everything is carried to the front of the Tent of Meeting, where the whole congregation draws near and stands before the LORD. Moses says that this is what the LORD has commanded, so that the glory of the LORD may appear. Then Aaron is told to approach the altar and make atonement for himself and for the people.

The altar, the blessing, and the firevv. 8–24

Aaron carries out the offerings in a long, exact procession: blood is placed on the altar and poured at its base; fat, kidneys, and the lobe of the liver are burned; the flesh and hide of his sin offering go outside the camp. The sons of Aaron bring blood and pieces, while Aaron washes, burns, presents, waves, and splatters according to what has been commanded. When the work is done, Aaron lifts his hands and blesses the people, then steps down. Moses and Aaron enter the Tent of Meeting, come out, and bless the people again; the text does not say why the entrance or the second blessing occurs. Then the glory of the LORD appears to all the people. Fire comes from the LORD’s presence and consumes the burnt offering and the fat portions on the altar, at which the people shout for joy and fall facedown—a remarkably compact arrangement of jubilation and prostration.

  1. Lev 9:1On the eighth day Moses summoned Aaron and his sons and the elders of Israel.

  2. Lev 9:2He said to Aaron, “Take for yourself a young bull for a sin offering and a ram for a burnt offering, both without blemish, and present them before the LORD.

  3. Lev 9:3Then speak to the Israelites and say, ‘Take a male goat for a sin offering, a calf and a lamb—both a year old and without blemish—for a burnt offering,

  4. Lev 9:4an ox and a ram for a peace offering to sacrifice before the LORD, and a grain offering mixed with oil. For today the LORD will appear to you.’”

  5. Lev 9:5So they took what Moses had commanded to the front of the Tent of Meeting, and the whole congregation drew near and stood before the LORD.

  6. Lev 9:6And Moses said, “This is what the LORD has commanded you to do, so that the glory of the LORD may appear to you.”

  7. Lev 9:7Then Moses said to Aaron, “Approach the altar and sacrifice your sin offering and your burnt offering to make atonement for yourself and for the people. And sacrifice the people’s offering to make atonement for them, as the LORD has commanded.”

  8. Lev 9:8So Aaron approached the altar and slaughtered the calf as a sin offering for himself.

  9. Lev 9:9The sons of Aaron brought the blood to him, and he dipped his finger in the blood and applied it to the horns of the altar. And he poured out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar.

  10. Lev 9:10On the altar he burned the fat, the kidneys, and the lobe of the liver from the sin offering, as the LORD had commanded Moses.

  11. Lev 9:11But he burned up the flesh and the hide outside the camp.

  12. Lev 9:12Then Aaron slaughtered the burnt offering. His sons brought him the blood, and he splattered it on all sides of the altar.

  13. Lev 9:13They brought him the burnt offering piece by piece, including the head, and he burned them on the altar.

  14. Lev 9:14He washed the entrails and the legs and burned them atop the burnt offering on the altar.

  15. Lev 9:15Aaron then presented the people’s offering. He took the male goat for the people’s sin offering, slaughtered it, and offered it for sin like the first one.

  16. Lev 9:16He presented the burnt offering and offered it according to the ordinance.

  17. Lev 9:17Next he presented the grain offering, took a handful of it, and burned it on the altar in addition to the morning’s burnt offering.

  18. Lev 9:18Then he slaughtered the ox and the ram as the people’s peace offering. His sons brought him the blood, and he splattered it on all sides of the altar.

  19. Lev 9:19They also brought the fat portions from the ox and the ram—the fat tail, the fat covering the entrails, the kidneys, and the lobe of the liver—

  20. Lev 9:20and placed these on the breasts. Aaron burned the fat portions on the altar,

  21. Lev 9:21but he waved the breasts and the right thigh as a wave offering before the LORD, as Moses had commanded.

  22. Lev 9:22Aaron lifted up his hands toward the people and blessed them. And having made the sin offering, the burnt offering, and the peace offering, he stepped down.

  23. Lev 9:23Moses and Aaron then entered the Tent of Meeting. When they came out, they blessed the people, and the glory of the LORD appeared to all the people.

  24. Lev 9:24Fire came out from the presence of the LORD and consumed the burnt offering and the fat portions on the altar. And when all the people saw it, they shouted for joy and fell facedown.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
