Joshua 5

Every verse links to the people and places named in it, and to the passages readers connect it with.

The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

The manna ends with almost administrative precision: Israel eats the produce of Canaan, and the next day the wilderness provision simply stops.

A pause at the edge of the landvv. 1–9

The kings west of the Jordan hear what happened to the river and lose heart. Then, at precisely this alarming moment for everyone nearby, the whole nation is circumcised with flint knives and remains in camp until healed. The reason reaches back through the wilderness: the men who came out of Egypt had died, and their sons had not been circumcised along the way. At Gilgal, the LORD gives the pause its name, saying that Egypt’s reproach has been rolled away.

Passover, then no more mannavv. 10–12

At Gilgal, on the plains of Jericho, Israel keeps the Passover. The following day brings unleavened bread and roasted grain from the land itself. Then the manna ceases—not after a speech, nor after a gradual transition, but the day after they eat the crops of Canaan. The wilderness menu has been quietly discontinued.

The answer outside the alternativesvv. 13–15

Near Jericho, Joshua sees a man with a drawn sword and asks the sensible military question: is he for Israel or for its enemies? The answer is neither. The figure has come as Commander of the LORD’s army, which rearranges the whole encounter; Joshua falls facedown, asks what his Lord has to say, and is told to remove his sandals. The ground, rather than the allegiance, gets the final word.

Berean Standard Bible, public domain. Names the Hebrew and Greek put in the verse link to the person, place or people they name; the address beside each verse is a link to that verse, which is what a reader copies and shares.

  1. Josh 5:1Now when all the Amorite kings west of the Jordan and all the Canaanite kings along the coast heard how the LORD had dried up the waters of the Jordan before the Israelites until they had crossed over, their hearts melted and their spirits failed for fear of the Israelites.

  2. Josh 5:2At that time the LORD said to Joshua, “Make flint knives and circumcise the sons of Israel once again.”

  3. Josh 5:3So Joshua made flint knives and circumcised the sons of Israel at Gibeath-haaraloth.

  4. Josh 5:4Now this is why Joshua circumcised them: All those who came out of Egypt—all the men of war—had died on the journey in the wilderness after they had left Egypt.

  5. Josh 5:5Though all who had come out were circumcised, none of those born in the wilderness on the journey from Egypt had been circumcised.

  6. Josh 5:6For the Israelites had wandered in the wilderness forty years, until all the nation’s men of war who had come out of Egypt had died, since they did not obey the LORD. So the LORD vowed never to let them see the land He had sworn to their fathers to give us, a land flowing with milk and honey.

  7. Josh 5:7And He raised up their sons in their place, and these were the ones Joshua circumcised. Until this time they were still uncircumcised, since they had not been circumcised along the way.

  8. Josh 5:8And after all the nation had been circumcised, they stayed there in the camp until they were healed.

  9. Josh 5:9Then the LORD said to Joshua, “Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you.” So that place has been called Gilgal to this day.

  10. Josh 5:10On the evening of the fourteenth day of the month, while the Israelites were camped at Gilgal on the plains of Jericho, they kept the Passover.

  11. Josh 5:11The day after the Passover, on that very day, they ate unleavened bread and roasted grain from the produce of the land.

  12. Josh 5:12And the day after they had eaten from the produce of the land, the manna ceased. There was no more manna for the Israelites, so that year they began to eat the crops of the land of Canaan.

  13. Josh 5:13Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in His hand. Joshua approached Him and asked, “Are You for us or for our enemies?”

  14. Josh 5:14“Neither,” He replied. “I have now come as Commander of the LORD’s army.” Then Joshua fell facedown in reverence and asked Him, “What does my Lord have to say to His servant?”

  15. Josh 5:15The Commander of the LORD’s army replied, “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did so.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
