The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

The Canaanites remain in Gezer, and the grand boundary recital ends with them as forced laborers.

Joseph’s allotment runs by landmarksvv. 1–4

The allotment for Joseph’s descendants begins at the Jordan by Jericho, rises through the wilderness towards Bethel, passes from Bethel—also called Luz—to Ataroth, then descends westward by Lower Beth-horon and Gezer until it reaches the Sea. Ephraim and Manasseh, Joseph’s sons, receive the inheritance; the borders have done nearly all the talking, but they have done it impressively.

Ephraim’s boundary takes the long way roundvv. 5–9

Ephraim’s inheritance is then traced by its clans: from Ataroth-addar to Upper Beth-horon and the Sea, from Michmethath by Taanath-shiloh to Janoah, down through Ataroth and Naarah to Jericho and the Jordan, and west from Tappuah along the Brook of Kanah to the Sea. The clans also receive cities and villages lying within Manasseh’s inheritance—a neat little territorial wrinkle, tucked into the final sentence.

Gezer keeps its old inhabitantsv. 10

At Gezer, the Canaanites are not driven out. They remain among the Ephraimites, though the chapter says they are forced laborers—a remarkably abrupt human footnote after so much careful geography.

  1. Josh 16:1The allotment for the descendants of Joseph extended from the Jordan at Jericho to the waters of Jericho on the east, through the wilderness that goes up from Jericho into the hill country of Bethel.

  2. Josh 16:2It went on from Bethel (that is, Luz) and proceeded to the border of the Archites in Ataroth.

  3. Josh 16:3Then it descended westward to the border of the Japhletites as far as the border of Lower Beth-horon and on to Gezer, and it ended at the Sea.

  4. Josh 16:4So Ephraim and Manasseh, the sons of Joseph, received their inheritance.

  5. Josh 16:5This was the territory of the descendants of Ephraim by their clans: The border of their inheritance went from Ataroth-addar in the east to Upper Beth-horon

  6. Josh 16:6and out toward the Sea. From Michmethath on the north it turned eastward toward Taanath-shiloh and passed by it to Janoah on the east.

  7. Josh 16:7From Janoah it went down to Ataroth and Naarah, and then reached Jericho and came out at the Jordan.

  8. Josh 16:8From Tappuah the border went westward to the Brook of Kanah and ended at the Sea. This was the inheritance of the clans of the tribe of Ephraim,

  9. Josh 16:9along with all the cities and villages set apart for the descendants of Ephraim within the inheritance of Manasseh.

  10. Josh 16:10But they did not drive out the Canaanites who lived in Gezer. So the Canaanites dwell among the Ephraimites to this day, but they are forced laborers.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.
