What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

Job pictures a universe in which mountains do not even know when God moves them, and a man cannot answer Him once in a thousand attempts.

The God who passes unseenvv. 1–18

Job begins with the old difficulty in its starkest form: how can a mortal be righteous before God, when God is wise, strong, and entirely beyond reply? Mountains are overturned without their knowledge, the earth is shaken from its place, the sun is told not to shine, and the stars are sealed away. God crosses the heavens and the sea, makes the constellations, and passes by without being seen. Even the number of possible answers has been made absurdly small: one in a thousand. Job can only beg his Judge for mercy, yet imagines that even an answer would bring a tempest and more wounds.

A court with no middle placevv. 19–35

The argument turns from God's vastness to Job's own case. Strength belongs to God, justice cannot summon Him, and even a blameless mouth would condemn its owner. Job says that the blameless and wicked are destroyed alike, while the earth is placed in the hand of the wicked and its judges blindfolded. His days flee like papyrus boats and a diving eagle. He considers changing his face and smiling, washing himself with snow and lye, but the scene only grows stranger: his own clothes would despise him, and he would still be plunged into the pit. What he lacks is not soap, courage, or eloquence, but a mediator who could stand between the two parties. So he ends alone.

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
