Isaiah 48

Every verse links to the people and places named in it, and to the passages readers connect it with.

The chapter

What happens here

Atlas's own reading, written from this chapter and nothing else, and published only once a person has approved it. Each scene names the verses it covers; the names inside it link to the people and places they name.

An unnamed ally is called against Babylon, and just as the speaker says he has not spoken in secret, another voice steps forward: “And now the Lord GOD has sent me, accompanied by His Spirit.”

A people with iron necksvv. 1–11

Jacob’s house bears the name of Israel, invokes the God of Israel, and leans on the holy city—though not, rather pointedly, “in truth or righteousness.” The LORD has announced former things in advance, partly to prevent the people crediting their idols when those things come to pass. Now come new things, hidden until their appointed moment, for this is a people whose ears have long been closed and whose forehead is bronze. They are tested in affliction, “but not as silver”; the furnace arrives with its metaphor carefully fenced off. Wrath is delayed, not because the people have suddenly become easy company, but for the sake of the Name and its glory.

The ally who is not namedvv. 12–16

The voice now gathers Jacob and Israel before the One who founded earth and spread out heaven, summoning the heavenly expanses as briskly as a company called to attention. The idols are asked which of them foretold what is coming. A chosen ally will carry out the desire against Babylon and act against the Chaldeans; he is called, brought, and promised success, but his name is not supplied. Then, immediately after “From the beginning I have not spoken in secret,” the voice shifts: “And now the Lord GOD has sent me, accompanied by His Spirit.” The reason for the shift is left standing in the open.

Leave Babylonvv. 17–22

The Redeemer speaks as teacher and guide, then pauses over the road not taken: had the commandments been heeded, peace would have flowed like a river and descendants multiplied like sand. Instead comes the plain command to leave Babylon and flee the Chaldeans, with the departure to be shouted to the ends of the earth as the LORD’s redemption of Jacob. The desert journey is supplied with water from a split rock, a remarkably handy arrangement for a people on the move. Then the final sentence closes the scene with no such refreshment for the wicked: “There is no peace,” says the LORD.

  1. Isa 48:1“Listen to this, O house of Jacob, you who are called by the name of Israel, who have descended from the line of Judah, who swear by the name of the LORD, who invoke the God of Israel—but not in truth or righteousness—

  2. Isa 48:2who indeed call yourselves after the holy city and lean on the God of Israel; the LORD of Hosts is His name.

  3. Isa 48:3I foretold the former things long ago; they came out of My mouth and I proclaimed them. Suddenly I acted, and they came to pass.

  4. Isa 48:4For I knew that you are stubborn; your neck is iron and your forehead is bronze.

  5. Isa 48:5Therefore I declared it to you long ago; I announced it before it came to pass, so that you could not claim, ‘My idol has done this; my carved image and molten god has ordained it.’

  6. Isa 48:6You have heard these things; look at them all. Will you not acknowledge them? From now on I will tell you of new things, hidden things unknown to you.

  7. Isa 48:7They are created now, and not long ago; you have not heard of them before today. So you cannot claim, ‘I already knew them!’

  8. Isa 48:8You have never heard; you have never understood; for a long time your ears have not been open. For I knew how deceitful you are; you have been called a rebel from birth.

  9. Isa 48:9For the sake of My name I will delay My wrath; for the sake of My praise I will restrain it, so that you will not be cut off.

  10. Isa 48:10See, I have refined you, but not as silver; I have tested you in the furnace of affliction.

  11. Isa 48:11For My own sake, My very own sake, I will act; for how can I let Myself be defamed? I will not yield My glory to another.

  12. Isa 48:12Listen to Me, O Jacob, and Israel, whom I have called: I am He; I am the first, and I am the last.

  13. Isa 48:13Surely My own hand founded the earth, and My right hand spread out the heavens; when I summon them, they stand up together.

  14. Isa 48:14Come together, all of you, and listen: Which of the idols has foretold these things? The LORD’s chosen ally will carry out His desire against Babylon, and His arm will be against the Chaldeans.

  15. Isa 48:15I, even I, have spoken; yes, I have called him. I have brought him, and he will succeed in his mission.

  16. Isa 48:16Come near to Me and listen to this: From the beginning I have not spoken in secret; from the time it happened, I was there.” And now the Lord GOD has sent me, accompanied by His Spirit.

  17. Isa 48:17Thus says the LORD your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: “I am the LORD your God, who teaches you for your benefit, who directs you in the way you should go.

  18. Isa 48:18If only you had paid attention to My commandments, your peace would have been like a river, and your righteousness like waves of the sea.

  19. Isa 48:19Your descendants would have been as countless as the sand, and your offspring as numerous as its grains; their name would never be cut off or eliminated from My presence.”

  20. Isa 48:20Leave Babylon! Flee from the Chaldeans! Declare it with a shout of joy, proclaim it, let it go out to the ends of the earth, saying, “The LORD has redeemed His servant Jacob!”

  21. Isa 48:21They did not thirst when He led them through the deserts; He made water flow for them from the rock; He split the rock, and water gushed out.

  22. Isa 48:22“There is no peace,” says the LORD, “for the wicked.”

Who else the chapter reaches

Names written in the English are linked in the text above. These are the ones that are not: an entity the Hebrew or Greek names under a spelling the translation does not use, or one reached only by an assertion about a verse of this chapter.

Named in the Hebrew or Greek somewhere in this chapter, under a form the English renders differently — the registry's Ludim against the translation's Ludites — so there is no word in the sentence to hang the link on.

Reached by an assertion Atlas extracted from a verse of this chapter rather than by a name written in it — a pronoun, a title, or a participant the sentence carries without naming. This layer is model-read and measured at 88.6–90.3% precision, and it is kept separate from the names above for that reason.
